I guess it must be a hardware problem then if I am so alone with that flash issue.  :'(

Did you try to run top in a terminal to watch what is using all the CPU resources?
I had similar graphic/video lockup issues with the imwheel driver. (uninstalled it to fix problem)

PS - also run a RAM check - I see faulty RAM causing similar problem on clients PC.
