Can't Burn Video DVD
« on: February 23, 2010, 08:06:21 AM »
For some reason, I can't burn a video DVD. No matter what program I use, it fails to burn. K3b says something like "unable to determine file size". Brasero says it can't burn with my current set of plugins, & it seems to want ONLY an iso. But all the plugins are enabled in the prefs? My video is an avi. I've NEVER been able to burn a video DVD, & I really want to make this work. Can someone help?

Check THIS

GUI users
If you prefer a GUI interface, K3b supports Video DVD authoring. You may want to configure K3b to add the -dvd-compat flag with growisofs, as some standalone DVD players will not play video DVDs created without this flag. This can be done through K3b with Settings/Configure K3b.../Programs/User Parameters.

Hope that helps.

Otherwise you might have to look at others apps like Imagination or 2mandvd (maybe?).

Maybe THIS in stead can help you out?

How am I supposed to add the "-dvd-compat flag"? I selected "growisofs".... then what? Click on the search button? That didn't do anything. What am I supposed to do? Those links you provided are too confusing, I have no clue what they're talking about.

Convert the .avi file into DVD format first using DeVeDe, available in the repo

When using DeVeDe, make sure you pick the DVD option as otherwise it defaults to .iso

"Convert the .avi file into DVD format first using DeVeDe, available in the repo

that is what i do, remember to test the menus, i don't remember how to create a dvd without menu in devede

do you need to convert a movie to dvd or just store it on a dvd?

if you need to store the movie just burn it to the dvd as the file it is so you can copy it again as a file

if you want to use it on a dvd player and the file is .mpeg, .avi or xvid(could be avi too) it is possible that you can watch it without converting it to a dvd structure

i have found some avi files with weird errors, sometimes open it with avidemux and save it again without any change fixes the errors it could have

Why do I have to convert it, first? I thought K3b or Brasero would do that automatically? Well, I'm trying DeVeDe. I'll see how it goes....

i never did it with k3b or knew it could do it, brasero afik can't do it, doesn't have the option

devede will give you some other options that just convert and burn, in fact devede doesn't burn, it creates a iso that can be burned with k3b or any other app

some videos could have errors when encoded or also a app could cut a section of the video and leave errors in the timemap of the video

you haven't told us the type of file

Well, it appears to have worked! Using DeVeDe did the trick :) It would've been easier if k3b accepted avi files for a dvd, but at least I can get the job done :) Thanx for the help!

"It would've been easier if k3b accepted avi files for a dvd"

some files are a pita, just downloaded a chapter of a tv series i am following and had a interesting surprise, the file was 50 mbs in size but vlc firmly believed that it was 22 hours and 30 minutes long...  suddenly no sound

the video works ok in avidemux after recompressing it to another format, there is some files that don't like to be used  ;D
