All browsers crash when navigating to site with flash content
« on: February 22, 2010, 06:01:20 PM »
Hi,

I'm having a strange problem with flash. Every time I go to a flash site (e.g. YouTube), my browser crashes (normally I use FF, but that also happens with Opera, Konqueror and Seamonkey). I don't even have to watch or listen to s.th. on that site, just having the YouTube website open crashes the browsers - at most I can watch 1'30" of a video.

The browser in question uses 100% or more of CPU when it crashes according to "top" in Konsole. I tried solving the problem with new installs, new users, disabling all extensions... nothing seems to help.

If it is any help to figure out what is the problem: Google Earth also crashes immediately after start up... crash log says:
Code: [Select]
Major Version 5
Minor Version 1
Build Number 3509
Build Date Sep 17 2009
Build Time 15:19:56
OS Type 11
OS Major Version 2
OS Minor Version 6
OS Build Version 26
OS Patch Version 8
Crash Signal 11
Crash Time 1266881450
Up Time 23,0684

Stacktrace from glibc:
./googleearth-bin[0x805caa6]
[0xb7efe400]

Any idea is welcome... I seem to be the only one experiencing this phenomenon, the search didn't come up with a lot?

could you give us a link to a page that gives you this problem?

also what specs have your machine, specially video card(what driver is using if you know)

my system also hates flash but doesn't crash and opera works faster than firefox in flash sites

T6 according to the OP "just having the YouTube website open crashes the browsers".

Andi_diver, what version of Flash are you using?

Good morning,

thanks for the answers! If I want to watch this video (
NOT THE MESSIAH TRAILER
) for example, FF freezes halfway and CPU usage goes to over 100%.  Same with any video on YouTube or any embedded YouTube video on any website. Does not happen with Vimeo website or embedded Vimeo videos though...

Flash plug-in is 10.0.42.34-1pclo. System is fully updated. Videocard: Intel Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (Card:Intel 810 and later)

Thanks again for your help!  :D

Andi_diver,

You might want to try the Intel 810 driver, as opposed to Intel 810 & Later. I've had much better luck with that particular driver.

why do you guys suggest to try the intel driver?

i don't see his hardware specs anywhere

also the video eats 100% of the cpu in my machine, by watching it on youtube directly for some weird reason it just eats 50% and the image is widescreen

if you are experiencing problems with the system, what cpu do you have?  also are you experiencing overheating problems?  it is the only reason i find to see a app crash in the situation you mention

how long you haven't done maintenance to that machine?

OK, it's not the driver. I changed according to suggestions - same problem. Then I thought that maybe the overheating is the point, so I opened up the machine and blew some air into it.
It was a good thing to do (we adopted a cat a couple of weeks ago  ::)), but didn't help with the flash problem.

I have an Acer Aspire 5610 with Intel CPU T2250 @ 1.73GHz, hard drive ATA ST9160821AS and 1 GB ram.

The temperature was never higher than 58°C (137° F).

Thanks.

ok, temperature is not the problem but a little high, being a intel with more than one core it is in a decent range if never goes over 70°C

still you haven't mentioned your video card or driver used, it is important with flash, also if you are using kde 3 or kde4(includes the use of compiz and kde4 desktop effects)

the reference number doesn't say anything, even on the acer website but in newegg it says integrated so it could be a intel gma4500 or a 3100, not sure which one is the right driver for it

in synaptic, can you reinstall the flash plugin?

also when watching a video, pause it and on right click on the video/settings

in the first tab called display uncheck the enable hardware acceleration, if the settings option is grayed out, open a video in youtube, it shows that option

after this, close firefox(not reload, close the app completely, all instances) or any other web browser, then open again and see if has any effect

this will make the video run entirely on cpu and won't try to use video card, there are other tricks for flash that can be tried

Sorry... I'm using KDE 4 (kdebase 4.3.4-1), the videocard according to PCC is a Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated (VGA compatible) Graphics Controller. That is all I can see...
There are four drivers that show up in Synaptic, see pic Intel1.png.
I don't use Compiz nor any desktop effects.
I tried reinstalling the flash plugin, but it didn't help either. I even uninstalled the PCLOS flash plugin and downloaded the actual version from the Adobe website - same thing: videos play halfway, then freezes.
I disabled hardware acceleration in flash, but no changes.

I am absolutely flabbergasted as to what may have caused this behavior... Is there a chance that a setting in the xorg.conf is wrong? I have a Dell monitor besides the laptop display.

I don't know whether this will help but I'll post it for you anyway.

Have you tried clearing your FFox cache in case anything in there has become corrupted.

As you've already tried disabling your FF addons you may want to try opening FF with a new "clean" profile

I may be teaching you to suck eggs (if I am apologies) but I'll add the command for creating a new profile just in case;

Enter the following in the "Run Command" (or from Konsole)

firefox -P

That will give you a fresh profile to try out

Also you may want to check that no other apps are running and taking up your precious  ;) memory / resources.
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

@menotu:
I am happy for any suggestion that might eliminate my flash problem. If s.b. would suggest I have to dance naked in the parking lot of the mall singing egyptian folk songs, I might even do that...  ;D
I even went a step further than what you suggested and installed a completely new user account on my computer, openend a virgin Firefox... and had the same problem. Thanks for your help though!  :)

@smcs_steve:
Yes, I did read that thread. It was one of the few results I found in the forum on my quest to watching flash videos. The problem also occurs in Opera, Seamonkey and Konqueror...
I guess it must be a hardware problem then if I am so alone with that flash issue.  :'(
