Problem with update notifier
« on: February 20, 2010, 05:38:14 PM »
Hi to all,
A nice little problem for you to look at.
The update notifier the sits at the rhs of the task bar is pretty inaccurate.
Since there have been no update to the 2009.2/2007 repository why does the update notifier tell me there are
some 500-600 updates for me?
Let us see who can explain this little oddity.

Copy and paste "update notifier" into the search field and hit the "search" button. If you don't find a problem with Update Notifier, I will mail you a buck.  ;)  I'm joking but I have found that little thing great when it works but a pain when it don't.

Do you have update notifier set to check for updates automatically?  Have it reload updates and see if the issue persists.  If it does, try running the following as root and post the output here (simulated update):
Code: [Select]
apt-get update && apt-get -s dist-upgrade

Hi to all, once again,
I did try that code snip-it and nothing to do as I would expect.
So why does the update notifier tell me, this morning, that there were 5000+ updates?
Having got it to check the updates  manually, It then says no update are available?
Why does this problem arise?

Update notifier keeps a list of packages each time it is run, then compares the list from the previous run to the current.  For some reason you still had an old package list stored for that user.
