Which version woult be good for legacy Pc?
« on: February 26, 2010, 08:20:23 AM »
Hi everybody!

While we are all waiting for the 2010 release I just thought about an old PIII 32Mb RAM computer that my boss has and sopped booting some months ago.It ran with very basic apps and W98.We never tried to reinstall as it is very old, but he has now asked me if there would be a basic linux OS that would make it run.

He says he would like to use it to read the news online and play solitaire with it, so we only need something very basic to see if it boots and install.

What would you try?

Thx.

I think you would have to up the RAM on that for almost any current distro.  Puppy or DSL maybe.  PCLOS LXDE if you can get 128M RAM on it.

how fast is that PIII?

if it is faster than 600mhz gnome, lxde and even kde4 could fit very well, i tested kde3 in a old ciryx c3 at 700 mhz and kde3 ran very well in livecd

the ram is the limit here, the board could support only up to 512 of ram and that could be the limit

when testing old pcs the big problem you could have is video card
