Power used???
« on: February 19, 2010, 10:52:20 PM »
Hi to all,
Can anyone tell me the power required to :
1... suspend to disk
2....suspend to ram
Only relative to each other.
And why should one use 1.. rather than 2 or visa-versa?
Many thanks
Gezza

Short version:
Suspend to disk will not use any power, but it takes longer to resume.
Suspend to ram uses some power (a much smaller amount than if the system is running regularly), but it resumes really quickly.

Thank you, Ds342
I wonder if you can answer a couple more questions?
1... suspend to ram....how long, since I assume the processor is not refreshing memory any more?
2....would not suspend to disk be better? I do not know about your power, but out dissapears quite frequently.
Many thanks for you qiuck answer to my last question.

"1... suspend to ram....how long, since I assume the processor is not refreshing memory any more?"

in this state the system is doing nothing except for waiting to be called again by a key on your keyboard

in suspend to disk the system is in off state and when you turn it on, the hard disk will load what the ram had loaded and was stored when you selected this option

suspend to disk is useful depending on what you do, in a laptop could be very useful to save battery if the machine is not that fast to boot

"I do not know about your power, but out dissapears quite frequently."

i'm not sure what you say there, do you have electricity or power outages frequently?

I reckon: If it's a laptop then forget "suspend". To maintain the data in memory the memory chips must be clocked, and this takes a fairly large amount of power. (This is why some people bother about cooling the memory cards.)  Sod's Law guarantees the battery will go flat and you will lose everything! (Because you were only going to be away for a minute or so..... but.... )
If it's a desktop, then if you never get power outages use suspend - it recovers faster ... except when it hiccups(  :'( )
Again, The Law of Sod will make sure you get your first outage the day you've suspended something REALLY important!

(And to any person who is about to write and tell me I'm too cynical...... if you're not retired then you haven't seen enough of life to judge yet!!!!  :)  )

Thanks guy's
From what has been said, it appears that in suspend to ram, the system is still in a powered up state even though all the light go out??!!
Can anyone give an estimate of the power used in suspend to ram as opposed to a working system, is it 1000:1
so if a machine normally consumes 200 watts to ram would consume 200mW?
As far as suspend to disk, I assume you can the disconnect the mains and move the computer to other position????
So as far as suspend is concerned, to ram is for seconds or perhaps an hour whereas to disk is almost for ever?
What I mean by power outage is the the local power grid shuts down and one cannot even boil water for a cuppa.

200 sounds too much, probably 130 only, if normally consumes 200 w in the suspend to ram it should use 15 w to 20 w

it is something like 10 to 1

the mainboard, ram and cpu(cpu in lower consumption state, saving lots of power) remains active, video card too, only network, sound card and similar stuff goes to sleep, cdrom and hard disk sort of sleeps too(cdrom could be just off, depends on the model and specs)

"As far as suspend to disk, I assume you can the disconnect the mains and move the computer to other position?"

mains?  disconnect it from the wall?  afik yes, it is in power off state

in suspend to disk, it is for the life of the hard disk, in ram, until there is no more electricity form wall or batteries, it can be around in this state(a laptop)for 5 to 6 hours

"What I mean by power outage is the the local power grid shuts down and one cannot even boil water for a cuppa."

you need a ups like this for this situations

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uninterruptible_power_supply

http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=22

for 1 or two pcs you can get a 600w unit, it will provide power for 10 to 15+ minutes depending on the consumption of the pc(s) you have connected to it

this gives you enough time to shut down properly the pc, these units will work very well for 3 to 5 years and then it will be necessary to change the battery inside r replace the whole unit

remember that suspend to ram or suspend to disc requires time to be applied and a power outage won't warn you 5 minutes before

Hi to all,
Just a thought!!!
I have upgraded my test box to 2.6.36.* kernel and now suspend does not work at all.
I suppose I must wait till the NEW PCLinuxos is out.

Where can I get kernel 2.6.36? Did you go back to the future again? Can I borrow your flux capacitor?

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

did the world ended in 2012?

afik the only kernel in testing is 2.6.32 so you posted the wrong number or installed it by hand another version

in both situations the forum can't support you, testing is for testing only and install by hand will mess your system and is not supported in this forum
