Why would You need to remember it... (I will remember it anyway). Openoffice is to slow so You come over to the forum and search for something to speed up Your openoffice :). Lot of topics about it so far. If You can search You will find them.

I don't know, but could it be that OOO performs faster with Intel processors than AMD? I've used it in two PCs with more or less the same specs except than one had Sempron and the other Celeron and in the last one it opened much faster, even cold starts.

Mine's AMD, using the tip here results in OOo opening in around 5 seconds cold on my machine, and less than ½ second second or subsequent time.

PCLinuxOS has no wealthy sponsors and can only survive with your donations! Don't wait it might be too late.

Running PCLOS on Athlon II/250 with 2Gb Ram using ASUS M2N68-AM Plus Mobo with Nvidia GF7600GT graphics, and Samsung NC10 Netbook

Ditto! This system is an AMD and after doing my "tweaks" my results mimic davecs timings.

Yup, I withdraw my words, the tip is certainly one of the bests I've tried so far... however, the doubt is still there, lol.

Lets be honest. LibreOffice or OpenOffice.org - this method works for both.

Installed Libre Office today. Used those exact same settings and I get 1 second starts.

My advices for faster OpenOffice startup:

Open any document.

Go to Tools > Options and then click on OpenOffice.org > Memory.

Change the value of Use for OpenOffice.org to 256 and [OK] the window.

Close the document and reopen it.

Another option I always set on this same Memory page is:

Enable systray QuickStarter > enable this and it will drop an icon in the task bar close to the Clock which you can then use to open individual OOo apps - its by far the quickest way of opening the apps!

Note 1: You may need to close and restart OOo and/or logout and back in again.

Note 2: Although Andy's setting of 256 speeds things up no end I personally found playing with different values paid off as it needs to be set for whatever capability your rig has.

I also changed the:

UNDO steps - lowered it.
MEMORY PER OBJECT: increased it

Writer and Spreadsheet do literally open within a second

LibreOffice 3.4 does not have the Quickstarter option. Hmmmm...

I just found out that 3.4.0 on my XP box at work DOES have Quickstarter option while 3.4.0 on my fully updated PCLOS KDE4 doesn't show it.

Some Linux / KDE issue maybe?
All that is is good. PCLinuxOS is.

LibreOffice loads so much faster than OpenOffice, org that I don't really see why one would need a quickstarter.
Feed the trolls!
They need it!
