Speeding up LibreOffice and OpenOffice.org
« on: February 19, 2010, 11:20:20 AM »
Hi all.

Some folks were complaining about OpenOffice.org 3.2 taking about 40 seconds (give or take a few) to start after a full reboot...

It takes 9 seconds to open first document after a full reboot here. Less then a second each time after that...

My advices for faster OpenOffice startup:

Open any document.

Go to Tools > Options and then click on OpenOffice.org > Memory.

Change the value of Use for OpenOffice.org to 256 and [OK] the window.

Close the document and reopen it.

Plus if You still think its to slow You may want to have a look here.

Hope this helps.

Andy

EDIT 1: FYI my machine is not even close to something that could be called speed deamon... Single core 1.5 GHz Intel Celeron CPU, 2 Gigs of RAM and 256 MB Intel 915 graphics... For more specs google Acer Travelmate 2420... and it opens OpenOffice.org documents even faster when the gtk-recordmydesktop is not hogging the CPU...

Thanks Andy, great suggestion! I had downloaded Softmaker's office suite when it was free around Xmas (promotion) and was impressed by how fast every page comes up compared with my "old" OOo. Now they are just about equal and I don't have to pay for a new version of Softmaker.

Another option I always set on this same Memory page is:

Enable systray QuickStarter > enable this and it will drop an icon in the task bar close to the Clock which you can then use to open individual OOo apps - its by far the quickest way of opening the apps!

Note 1: You may need to close and restart OOo and/or logout and back in again.

Note 2: Although Andy's setting of 256 speeds things up no end I personally found playing with different values paid off as it needs to be set for whatever capability your rig has.

I also changed the:

UNDO steps - lowered it.
MEMORY PER OBJECT: increased it

Writer and Spreadsheet do literally open within a second

Funny, I just tried enabling that systray icon, but it does not appear anywhere. What's the secret? I did it and rebooted twice.

My OO version is 3.1.1.1

What I used to do is I used to create desktop file and place it in /home/user/.config/autostart

The command that I was using was:

Code: [Select]
openoffice.org3 -quickstart -nologo -nodefault
Try running this command in konsole and see what happens. If it works create new application link in the location mentioned above (replace 'user' with your login ;) ) name it qstart and in the command field paste the command mentioned above... See if that helps.

I'm guessing your running 2009x ?  If so that option doesn't work properly in 3.1.1 (when I was using 2009 I googled it and it seems to be a known issue on certain setups when 3.1x is being used)  :(

I'm not sure whether 2009 is being (or has been) upgraded to 3.2 version - have you had a look in the repo for any updates?

True and True. If he runs 2009.2 upgraded then he shouldnt have OO.o 3.2 installed AND in this version of the system the quickstarter wasn't working nicely. In KDE4 however (Beta 1 and 2 isos OR if You added KDE4 to 2009.2 installation) this option works very well.

updating 2009 or whatever else will not deal with updating OO. To update OO to the latest 3.2, also on 2009 - normal or YouCanToo repo, you must run getopenoffice. When the next OO3.2.1 will be out (~ 3-4 weeks) then you must run getopenoffice again to update to the latest version.

Ahhh, that explains it. On my HP desktop I am still certainly running 2009 in KDE3.5 So I just installed OO3.2 on my VAIO, that is running Beta1 and KDE 4. Systray Quickstart works like a charm - and thanks for all the insights. I am planning to refresh the HP Media Center when the new iso is ready.

PS. Quite a workout for the VAIO just to prove that the little icon can be produced :D

Nice tip, but will anyone remember it in 2 weeks?

Is there some kind of 'sticky' in space so all, new and old would know this when using OO?

There take my idea of some kind of 'in the cloud app' just remember me.
