Thunderbird 3 duplicate emails
« on: February 18, 2010, 05:50:34 AM »
Has anyone else here had a similar problem with Thunderbird 3?  When I upgraded it a while back I imported settings etc from the old version and everything seemed to work ok that way.  What is happening though, and has since upgrade is duplicate emails are continually being downloaded from my isp account.  Could be 2 copies, 3 copies, 5 copies each time the program is started up, and sometimes when it is automatically checking by itself.  When you have alot of emails, it's annoying deleting them all manually. This only occurs on 2 pop3 accounts, not gmail imap in the same program. I've gone through the settings over and over, tried the recommended change in about:config  (http://www.ghacks.net/2007/05/18/automatically-remove-duplicate-mails-in-thunderbird/)  etc, but not working.  There is an add-on but it doesn't look like it is working very well at the moment. I don't believe it is a problem with my isp because thunderbird 2 on another machine, kontact on this one don't duplicate.

By any chance do you have "leave mail on server" checked?  That would cause the same message(s) to be sent repeatedly.

Yes, I do have "leave the mail on server" checked to allow the message to be retrieved on multiple computers. Normally in the past and with other mail programs, including TBird2, each computer would only ever download one copy until the message was deleted by myself.  This has only happened with TBird3, on my main computer, when it went through the upgrade a while back.  Kmail on the same machine functions properly and will only ever retrieve one copy.  I've googled quite a bit and it appears quite a few people are having similar problems and problems with multiple folders etc.  Although short of installing an add on to remove the messages after the fact, I've not found a solution yet.

I also get this problem since an auto update which forced v 3 onto me. As another post here observes, the folder structure of v3 has to be seen to be believed. If you have multiple e-mail accounts you get a complete mess! You seem to get a set of folders for each e-mail account, but they get muddled and do not follow any rational strict configuration. I get messages duplicated in the account folders and the generic folders.

The whole thing is an unholy mess and I have not been able to find any option to stop this nonsense, I am afraid. (I do not have the option to leave a copy on the servers selected.)

On my PC the same thing happened and this caused the disk to become fully utilized.
When starting Thunderbird now, it suggests that I am a new user so I cannot reach my mail anymore to use the Compact facility for example. Could that be the case or should I start a new and will I become owner of the same Sent and Inbox as formerly used again?
