Solved - KDE 4.3 - Move to Trash Slow
« on: February 17, 2010, 08:22:23 PM »
I updated to KDE 4 quite a while back. All has been good well aside from a few well documented bugs that are awaiting correction, except....

Moving a large folder with lots of data (thousands of files, ~60GB) to the trash takes an extremely long time - up to an hour. It then takes a long time to empty the trash. My system is relatively new and performance is otherwise quite snappy.

Any ideas?

why don't you delete it instead of move to trash then delete??

this adds delete to right click

The best way to save face is keep the bottom half shut.

in the technical side, moving to trash could involve depending on the system move the files form one hard disk to another, also form one partition to another and this takes time, especially if you have lots of small files or a really big file

in the logical side, move 60 gbs to trash?

how big is your hard disk, your trashcan?

i find a big 3 gbs but 60 sounds to me enough to kill a system!

if you need to remove those files from your system, delete is better, faster and permanent, also doesn't require that you empty the trashcan later

in windows and linux i use shift+del to remove permanently the files, no trashcan in the middle

why are you moving the files to the trash folder?

I don't like adding the "delete" command in Dolphin because it is just too easy for me to delete files when I intended to move them to the trash.

I like the shift+del command though....it would be tough to do this accidentally.

Thanks for the tip.

What are the trash settings set to? Default is I think 10% of disk size.
