Video players "Always on Top"
« on: February 17, 2010, 03:25:44 PM »
Just wondering if anybody knows does Kaffeine or MPlayer have an "always on top" feature like VLC does, so that you can be working in the background while watching a video?

If I've understood your question correctly, you're asking about a function of the desktop environment, not something specific to particular programs. In KDE4, rightclick the title bar, click "Advanced", and click "Keep Above Others". Or place a button on the bar that does the same thing.

But perhaps you meant something else?

it is actually a function of a window manager. KDE's window manager is called "kwin", gnome's window manager is called "metacity"

it is always best to also mention what version of kde you are using since some solutions and problems are dependent of what desktop environment you are using

I am using KDE 3.5 for the moment. I specified the example of VLC because the feature is actually in the app itself, whereas I can't seem to find it in the other video players.

cappadocian,

The truth is that you do not need a special function in the application.

Look at the upper left hand corner of the video window. It does not matter which player it is.

Click on the icon that you find there.

You will get a menu list.

Move the cursor over  the top item on the list which says "Advanced".

You will then see another menu.

Click on the top item on that list that says "Keep Above Others".

Now your movie window will stay above anything else on the screen.

If you decide that you have changed your mind in the middle of the movie, just go click it again. It toggles on and off.

If you look at the list, you will see that you can also make it such that it never covers anything else also.

Also, this is not a permanent setting. The player will use the original default the next time you use it.

Have fun.

Thanks for that. It's just one of those little things I didn't know about because I was so used to using VLC, even if I actually prefer Kaffeine.

I suspect this may be part of a larger problem for me. PCLOS is SO easy to use, I'm pretty sure I've gotten dumber Linux-wise over the years because of it, as opposed to the days of fiddling with Suse 9.0 and such. Once upon a time I even knew some of the basics of running BSD, and even had PhosphurOS running on one machine. Seemed to have forgotten all of it.

Yeah,  it gets kind of frustrating when you have been away from things a while and everything has changed just enough to keep you guessing.

But at least with PCLOS, we have this forum which has to be the friendliest forum I have ever visited.

The thing is that we all have sections of Linux that we know very well and sections that we know nothing about.

With 2010 coming out, a lot of the newer guys are going to know as much as some of the old timers on some features.

When we share, we all win. And if we make a mistake, someone will correct it in a non vindictive way such that we do not lead the new guy astray.

Now, I just have to know. How is it that  each of your posts says that it is the sixth one that you have made?

EDIT:   Well, I learn something new every day. I did not realize that the number of posts is a variable on the web site and will show the current number of posts made by a person as of the time that you read a post. I thought that it represented the number at the time that a post was added to the forum.
