Planning a new build
« on: February 16, 2010, 03:07:06 PM »
As of this moment who has better support for graphic cards, ati or nvidia?  It's been a while since my last built.  Did ati get any better since amd bought them?  Does amd still has a better support than intel as far as cpu goes?  Any inputs is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

ati has improved quality but nvidia is still the preferred option in linux

i personally recommend you a video card with passive cooling solution, recently i found a ati video card with that characteristic under $50

intel and amd has the same support in cpus, as always

what you can find problematic is the chipset supporting the cpu, as you know newer chipsets will give you problems in linux but this happens in intel, amd, via and sis chipsets

I've had a Radeon agp 9200 pro, Radeon pci-express 4650, and a Radeon pci-express 4850 at present, working in PCLinuxOS just great.

Oh... and a Radeon agp 3450 too.

I will never return to ATI, just bought an AGP Nvidia card for a Frankenputer I will build this weekend.

Other posters report good experiences using ATI, the advice from sammy2fish for example.

I have to agree with Crow, I will go out of my way to keep from using ATI. I have an ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 in my laptop and it sucks big time

that generation of video card never had good support, other generations like hd 2000 and 3000 work very well

4000 series too, i haven't heard reports of 5000 series form ati yet

What prompt me to make a new build is Second Life. All my video cards are agp.  I currently have a PNY 5200 ultra installed, I tried to replaced it with a radeon 9800 pro, it worked only on analog but on digital my screen is blank.  I have a bfg 7800 gs(400w min.), but my psu is not sufficient enough.

I've been looking for a psu that is agp compatible but I can't find.  After doing my research my pc is old but thanks to pclinux os it help me save money.  I'd rather use my current pc if I could find an agp compatible psu, it's more cost effective.

psu agp compatible?

i'm sorry, how compatible?

with a molex old connector you say?  or with 4 or 6 pin special connector for the video card?

thermaltake could be what you need, take a look at their website

not all the video cards around require a molex or a pcie extra connector

many low power consumption video cards exist

a recent model form ati, pci express doesn't require it, the 5570 and the 5450

i'm sure that there are offers from nvidia with similar requirements and similar prices but i don't know alot about nvidia video cards

PSU's are not OS dependant.  It just depends as to whether it will give you all the connections you want.

I have a http://www.coolermaster.com/product.php?product_id=5906 600w powersupply that will even give my son's Radeon 5850 everything it needs...(and he is a hardcore gamer).

The rumours that nVidia is better with Linux, were once true.  But times are always changing...

after reading the latest post in this forum mentioning nvidia cards, it is 50/50 Cydell

latest models on both ati and nvidia will give you problems

For what is worth, just installed an AGP PNY Nvidia 6200 250 MB graphics card in place of the ATI Radeon 9550 (also with 250MB) and KDE 4 loves it, I have the KDE effects working now, without effects the Radeon was extremely slow.

AGP cards are hard to find now and are not cheap, this was the last at the store and I have seen it since December but my budget didn't allow to buy it until now. I was still there because people didn't liked the price.
