This afternoon, I typed a document in Open Office Writer and, fortunately saved it. When I went to print it, the only choice of printer that I could get was Generic. The document certainly went nowhere, and the HP 840 C printer remained resolutely silent.
When I installed PCLinuxOS 2009.2, I used KDE Control to find the printer which is connected via a USB link to the computer. I also checked in PCC control and there was the printer showing there as well.
However, over my evening meal, I decided that, as I had used Get Open Office after setting up the printer, then maybe OO couldn't see the printer. Therefore, I uninstalled the printer and reinstalled it from PCC.
Upon opening the document again, I was pleased to see that Control P brought up the HP840C and allowed me to print it.
