When you do a reinstall your /home should remain untouched, assuming you have a separate /home, so if your mp3's are in /home then you will not lose them. You should still make at least one backup of these files to another device, flash memory, external hdd, dvd-r, but I would make 2 backups to be on the safe side.

Yep I do just the same, I've had a files back up corrupted some years ago and I became very paranoid
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

I don't own an iPod like device but I can't see this being a problem. If you can copy from your PC to the device you should be able to copy back from the device to your PC. I suggest you give it a trail run, in both directions, to see if this works. I would still make 2 backups though..

If you can run to the cost then you should think about investing in a usb HDD or if you have an old PC you can strip out the HDD buy a caddy and use that as your backup device. This is what I have done for one of my backup devices.
