Playing DVDs

Hi all. I'm new to Linux so please forgive me if I mess up. I'm having a small problem with PCLINUX. Using Kaffene I can watch all my NTSC dvds I wish, but I simply cannot get my Linux machine to play any of my PAL dvds. "Why PAL?"  I hear some of you ask, Simply because I have encountered some dvds on a subject matter that interests me that have not been offered here in the USA in NTSC as of yet and I have no idea if they are ever going to be released here. For the record please note that these are fully legitimate dvds and not cloned borrowed or copied or anything else. They are legally purchased from a fully legitimate site. Back to the story; I can't get them to play under any applications that I have on my system. I've tried Kaffeine, Mplayer, gxine, vlc, kmplayer or mplayer. I have dled all of the libraries, codecs and patches and still nothing works for me. Any help  would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I have never encountered anything in the PAL format but......

do you have LIBDVDCSS installed ?

This is used to go around or by pass DVD security.

You might also want to try and install VLC from the repository.

Only thing I can think of is that the drive has its region code set and that is preventing the playing of the DVDs from another region.

To quote Old-Polack in another thread:

Make sure you have the packages libdvdcss2, libdvdread3, libdvdread4, and libdvdnav4, installed, through Synaptic, and you should be able to play your DVDs on any of the Linux players. I have pretty much all of the players installed, to be able to help if any are the source of anyone's problem, and I can play both PAL and NTSC DVDs from any region. At least, haven't found any yet, that wouldn't play.

PC-Guy - And if that still doesn't work...... You don't say how many PAL DVDs you have. If not many, converting them to NTSC isn't difficult.
