Icons in panel rearrange themsleves

I created a new panel and it's placed at the top of my screen. I have several apps there. On each new boot, the icons move around.  They never stay in the same order even though widgets are locked.  The first few seem to stay put, the last four or five shuffle around.

my taskbar, i moved it to the top and never had this problem

what can change places is the system tray, it just shows what is being loaded at the order is loaded

I was going to post a reply that would have been almost identical to yours -- but then I noticed that two of my panel icons (not in the system tray) had swapped places. But does it matter? We'll get a new version of KDE after just a few days.

Maybe it wants to be like Windows, I never have things in the same place through disguised explorer crashes.

Oh will the 2010 pclinux os have an 'unused shortcuts on your desktop' feature?
I'm not sure I can live without it...

A reinstall and not an update? When is this scheduled to happen? I wanna make sure I have all documents backed up and in place. I'm thinking that we'll need to do a complete reinstall, as in, reformat the drive to make sure that previous versions of KDE do not conflict.

Or am in incorrect?

This is just marginally about KDE4.4. It involves most of the packages in the repo, as Tex explained here:

The original plan was to simply update 2009 through 2010. Due to the complex issues and user intervention required to go to new kernel 2.6.32.4, udev, hal, initscripts, plymouth bootsplash, speedboot, xorg, compiz 3D, nvidia/fglrx drivers, ext 4 default file system, KDE 4.4 it is easier for me to provide a new ISO with a 2010 repository in a couple of weeks than to spend 3-4 months trying to work up some kind of valid upgrade path that probably be more trouble to the end user than it is worth. Once we get everyone on 2010 we can keep rolling along with updates again.

The root partition will definitely have to be formatted and installed. This is where a separate home partition comes in handy.

I personally will also delete the .kde4 folder in my home directory and set up all I need again, but it actually shouldn't be necessary.  Of course it always depends on how much effort is required to get back to a working environment one is accustomed to.

I hope this helps understand the process a little more

Yes, I 've just come up to speed with KDE4. So, you'll have to excuse me.

The panel is a standard panel added via the "Add Panel" routine. After adding the panel, I simply dragged and dropped icons for my apps from the menu to the panel.

i have 5 icons and they stay on the same place since october, i can't find a reason for this unless you removed or added many apps to that bar and some of the apps are not installed in the system anymore

No. Nothing has been uninstalled.

I've added icons to my bottom panel and they stay put. 

I'm thinking I should simply remove the top panel and start over and see what happens.

I have 15 icons on this top panel. the first 7 seven stay in place. the rest get jumbled on the next boot.
I've tried recreating the panel and the same thing happens. I'm thinking I'll place five icons on two or three panels and see what happens.

I had that with my current KDE4 install. Needed to remove the panel with icons. Reboot. Create new panel. Fill it with icons. Log out. Reboot. Check did it changed. If it didnt it should be safe to reboot from now on.

I keep thinking it's just me with these little annoyances, I didn't realise that I was an "early adopter"

I have exactly the same issue with a similar panel at the top of my desktop.

The left hand few icons stay put, the right hand ones move around mystically, not such a big deal though

(on the plus side, the KDE4 version of KDEnlive handles AVCHD Lite from the panasonic TZ7 perfectly )
