Looking at Homebank
« on: February 10, 2010, 08:00:11 PM »
I am looking at homebank to see if it will work for keeping my checkbook to replace kmymoney.  The kde3 repository has version 4.1.   I have installed it and exported kmymoney to qif and imported into homebank.  The import failed because of the difference between useage of the comma and period in numbers.  This is listed in their documentation as being settable under Edit>Preferences, but that is greyed out and inaccessible.

Anybody else have this issue?   I have emailed the developer in France, and waiting for an answer from them.

Just heard from the developer.  He says this is a bug that was fixed in version 4.2.

I was using the kde3 repo, so I'm off to check the other repos.

PASS repo still has only the 4.1 version.  Version 4.2 has the bug fixed, according to the developer.

 Homebank version 4.2 was packaged yesterday (minutes upon release) and will be processed in the 2010 repo.

@slick50:
Thanks for the update; I'll keep my eyes open for ver. 4.2 after the new 2010 release is ready.

@wayne1932:
While awaiting the KDE 4 version of KMyMoney, I've been experimenting with both HomeBank and Skrooge. At this point, my personal preference is for Skrooge but I encourage you to try them both and see which one works best for you.

I did not begin by trying to import a .qif from my KMM file (as I continue to use KMyMoney on my KDE 3 partition), so I didn't run into the problem you experienced. I decided that, for me, it would be easier to just start from scratch with the previous month's bank statement and manually enter the data.

Skrooge can handle split transactions well and HomeBank can sorta-kinda handle them (with a workaround). I'm using a method to do this that isn't pretty and probably violates basic accounting principles, but it does work and it allows you to track your expense/income categories more accurately:

I posted a few tips on entering split transactions in Skrooge here:

I'm still using kde3 for anything important I don't believe (personal opinion) that kde4 is ready for prime time yet.  I have a virtual box of kde4.   Skrooge had a problem that I don't remember right now, and it won't run on kde3.
