Features of KDE4.4
« on: February 10, 2010, 06:16:42 AM »
Hi all,

I thought I'd give those who don't know what to make of the new KDE release we'll be getting with PCLOS 2010 a link to an introduction along with screenshots and screencasts. Mind you, these are not howtos, but just an overview of what to expect.

And I for one am pretty excited!

Have a look: http://www.kde.org/announcements/4.4/guide.php

I'v also posted a few "feature preview" youtube videos that I came across here:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,66296.msg538779.html#msg538779

..I think they show a few more details that are not on the KDE site linked above.

Thanks for the addition, travisn000. I now remember watching those videos, but completely forgot about them.

I'm sure especially those not sure what to make of the changes coming up will be thankful. I've been running KDE4 from the beginning, but there are many out there that are hesitant to make the switch.

The KDE site is probably a better place to begin, as the others may be a little overwelming at first..  I just thought I would mention them again, as they show alot of great features!

I too switched to KDE4 early on; the first few days took a bit of adjustment, but overall I have been very happy with it...  I've been eagerly awaiting the 4.4 release (more than any other) since watching those videos.  I love the idea of being able to add disparate applications as tabs in the same window.  The auto-resizing of windows when pushed to screen edges will also be a useful feature.

In previous PCLOS releases of KDE4 tex had disabled nepomuck due to poor performance..  I think I saw on his twitter page that it is now more functional and will likely be enabled on the 2010 release (..for those not familiar with it, it is the live search & filter engine used in many parts of KDE4; it should offer functionality similar to Google Desktop -- and more)

Although I am on KDE 4, I still maintain the 3.5 look as closely as it could. Time to let go and go full swing on the forthcoming release for me.
