Computer freezes
« on: February 10, 2010, 12:19:05 AM »
Hi,

I have been getting freezes after doing a fresh re-install,
1) I wiped the disk clean, using Killdisk (which i've always used).
2) re-installed and done a full update with KDE4.

After rebooting the computer it would freeze after about 5mins,no mouse or keyboard causing me to switch off by the power button.
When i reboot it gets as far as the login, put my password and it freezes, even as "root" it is the same, the longest i've had is 15mins logged in,but mostly it freezes at loggin in, so far i've found no solution either here or googling.

I've done the Sata option on booting, but that makes no difference.

Mobo is an Asus A8N-SLI PREMIUM.
CPU 2.8 dual core (intel) with Artic pro 64 fan and heatsink,
nvidia GEForce 6600 with a Zalman cooling fan,(driver was 180, which was chosen on install).
160Gig Sata drive and a Sata dvd superwriter speedplus,
corsair VX450W power supply.
2Gig Ram
Monitor 19" lcd widescreen set at 1280x1024 @ 60Hz
The system is set at default, except for booting,
1)diskdrive
2)harddrive
3)removable

I would have liked to give some kind of output but is not possible.

Really would like to get it running again, windows (yuk) will run on it no problem.

Any help is well appreciated.

Thanks in Advance.

What kernel did you install? I was getting some very odd behaviour when  I was trying out some of the latest kernels in testing, mostly hanging (sometimes) at boot and the like, but it froze on me as well using 2.6.31 I think it was.

2.6.26.8.tex3 it was still the same, did another re-install managed to get the 2.6.27.31.tex5, but that was the same.

I had a similar problem after updating to KDE4. (Although my system didn't freeze quite as frequently as yours.) Installing the 2.6.32 kernel from testing fixed it.

Thanks Blackbird, didn't consider testing as i'm a bit wary going that route, might just try it, nothing to lose ATM, no hair left to pull out.  ;D ;D

May I suggest that you take another look at your video driver.

coolbreeze -- i feel for ya.  My setup is pretty similar and i've been having computer freezing problems for a while now as well.  Who knows what's going on.

Maybe i'll try another Kernel as well.

Have a great morning!  :)

Thanks frazelle09, well i'm using the problem box right now to write this, unfortunately  :( :'( it's not PCLos, i've  d/l'd mandriva 2010,kernel 2.6.31.5, no freeze, but i seriously do NOT like it, it is absolutely awfull in my opinion, the Dev's here are really doing a great job with what they have, Kudos to the guy's, i'm not sleighting Mandy it's just not for me.

Please Tex, i've run out of hair and pulling my skin off, i'll be skeleton soon.
