After update, printing quit.
« on: February 08, 2010, 04:36:52 PM »
Printing was working fine on my system ... until I did an update, but after the update printing quit working and I can't get it going again.  It seems that synaptic removed some essential items.  Among the problems, in the PCLinux Control Panel, the "configure printer" function disappeared completely.  After wasting a lot of time, I also found that printerdrake was completely missing.  So I reinstalled it, but after jumping through all the hoops, still can't get printing to work again.  Among the error messages I am seeing at various stages are these:

== Unable to create temporary printer [OK]

== Connection to CUPS server failed.
Check that the CUPS server is correctly installed and running.

== An error occurred while retrieving the printer list:
Connection to CUPS server failed. Check that the
CUPS server is correctly installed and running.
Error: /var/run/cups/cups.sock: connection refused (10).

This isn't the first time I've had problem with having updates wreck things.

What do I need to do to get printing working again?

Very frustrating.

Do you need to re-install the CUPS server? Did it go away as well?

It did not go away, but I did reinstall it anyway just to be sure.
Still can't print.

After trying everything I could find to try, still could not print.
But the next day after having no success, printing mysteriously just started working again.  Go figure?

Is that from the link or did you go another route? you did something right, maybe you rebooted and it sorted it out.

Glad you got it sorted.

Thanks for that link. Lots of interesting and potentially helpful information from it, but none of the things I tried worked, including numerous reboots after each attempted "fix."  Nothing worked.  But the next day (with no other changes), it just started working again.  Very strange.  The big mystery, however, is why it just quit working in the first place.

And now today, printing quit working again. Bummer.
What is causing this?

I finally found a way to get printing started again:
As root: # /etc/rc.d/init.d/cups start <E>
But the question remains, what keeps turning it off?
