MiniMe fully updated and with KDE4
« on: February 09, 2010, 06:27:17 AM »
Hi could anyone give advice on how can I remaster MiniMe fully updated with KDE4 and if possible, also with the kernel 2.6.32.2 from the testing repository, to fit preferably on a CD, any help would be appreciated thanks. :)

Hi OnlyHuman-

At the top of the Remaster forum are several "stickied" posts with pretty detailed guides. Not sure how familiar you are with the remaster process, it can be pretty simple, depending on your setup & expectations. There is really a lot of helpful info there. A big issue might be to get it to fit on one cd as kde4 is bigger than 3.5.
You might consider waiting a few days (hopefully) to see what form the new 2010.iso takes. Maybe Tex can wizard it down to a cd minime! He's good at delivering the best!!
Otherwise try checking out the sticky posts, update your install to your specs, give it a crack & post results. Should be plenty of interested folks to lend a hand.
See you!
John

Remasters are fun and addictive  ;D

Just remember that soon will be a 2010 release and we all will have to reinstall.

Hi John, I will look more closer at the remastering stickies, I did an update on MiniMe and made an iso without KDE4 and it was 449mb in size, I added KDE4 and made an iso using remasterme which I believe uses lzma that ended up at 782mb, not sure ifI could reduce that size, that was all with MiniMe's original kernel.
Hi Crow, any idea if PCLinuxos 2010 will include kernel 2.6.32.2, and if its release is very near, looking forward to it, hope it gives compositing on all ATI and Nvidia graphics cards.  :) Thanks for your help and advice.

You could try uninstalling the other kernels which are slightly large in their sizes.

You can read it from Texstar himself http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,67780.msg553277.html#msg553277

As for the support to ATI cards I won't expect so much  :(  my video problems started when I bought one

You won't get composting on older ATI cards. Whatever the ATI 10.1 fglrx driver supports will get composting. Everything else will use xorg ati or radeon driver.

Thanks Texstar, for that info, I made a bad mistake buying an Ati card,  :(  my old Nvidia FX5200 on an older pc still works an thats with kernel 2.6.32.7.
Thanks Crow for that link on what Texstar said about the new PCLinuxos 2010, really looking forward to that.
Thats a good suggestion Archie about removing original kernel, but not sure how to go about doing that, worried if I just deleted it the new kernel may not work, any advice on how to safely do that?
Thanks everyone for your help.

I didn't realize that ATI supported composting. I've been throwing them away.

Cheers.

I have an ATI4350 (member purchase donation) using the 10.1 fglrx driver. I have compiz and/or KDE composting enabled and working. It works great for 3D desktop and 3D games. It doesn't do very well with streaming movies in full screen. The xorg ati/radeon driver does not do 3D desktop or 3D games but it works well for streaming movies in full screen.

You can remove the old kernels with synaptic. Open synaptic, search for kernel (lookin name to reduce hits) & mark for removal. While you are there you could check that synaptic is deleting installed rpm's. That's in settings/preferences/files.

Thanks Johnmart for that advice, though having so much trouble with graphics card with newer kernels, thanks for the info about fglr Texstar, I am quite surprised the new fglr is not still supporting many graphics cards that are not new, bit of a blow for linux users, as most these cards I am told will work fine on Windows 7, which seems more backwards compatable. :(
I imagine quite a few people will be left behind, wonder what will happen about repositories? one for the latest, and hopefully one for the pre kernel 2.6.27.31 which will enable people to continue having compositing with compiz fusion etc and not take a step backwards just because they cannot afford the latest pc.

If I cannot use the newer Kernels with my pc with my ati graphics card with 3d is there an easy way to download the present repository before its all updated, so if I want any software I can still have it for my old AMD 3500+ 2gig ram 512 mb radeon x1650 320gig hdd relic machine.   Thanks

Update reinstalled my updated minime and tried to install compiz like I used to have spent hours getting no where video problem either black or white screen, reinstalled againing with the 2009 mininime original disk I had, hope for some luck but no, think download compiz or some libraries in the repositories not compatable, oh well know when I'm beaten.  :( Thank goodness for Windows.
