radeon x1650 card and kernel 2.6.32.2

Hi wonder if anyone can help I have a ATI Radeon X1650 graphics card, after installing kernel 2.6.32.2 I can no longer get Kde4 compositing and 3d effects, any advice or help would be appreciated, thanks.

1. how did you got this kernel?  i don't see it on repos

2. are you using ati drivers for this card?  afik it is supported and has drivers working on repos

do you have "dkms" set to start at boot time? if not, go to pcc services section, enable "dkms" to start at boot time and reboot and try to enable compositing again

you should always do the above when changing kernels

Hi, thanks for your help, I downloaded the kernel 2.6.32.2 from the testing repository, as new thought I should get the driver for X1650 from ATI website, which I found in legacy drivers its driver version 8.593 T6, so maybe they don't bother with updating older cards now. 

I had a look in the control center Muungwana and there was a tick in the box for boot with DKMS , though noticed it was not running, but assume that its only running on boot, tried restarting composite but it says it has been suspended by another application,   thanks again for your help.  

P.S, does any one know when the new PCLinuxos kde4 version comes out with the kernel 2.6.32.2 in testing? I tried to remaster MiniMe with kde4 using lzma, but size was too big for CD.

1. the testing repository is unsupported

2. the video card is supported by the legacy driver, other than that, use xorg ati driver

3. supposedly pclinux 2010 will come with 2.6.32 kernel or a newer one

about cd size, why you try to do a remaster on a cd?    try with a rewritable dvd

9.3 driver is the latest listed for this card.

I personally haven't tried a ATI proprietary driver with the .32 series kernels as I've switched everything to Nvidia when I ran into issues a couple kernels ago with ATI drivers not playing very well with them.
I'd try installing the 9 series driver from testing myself, but it's your box to implode as you wish.

Hi MaddogF16, the driver you mentioned 9.3 is the one I used, when installing think it then called it 8.593.
From my own experience, I agree ATI cards are more of a pain on Linux than Nvidia, wish I had bought Nvidia now know the hassle with ATI and Linux, but ATI card was a cheap option at the time and ran the games well on Windows that my young son wanted to play, (he can't stand Linux as unable to play his games, and thinks I'm nuts trying to use it).

nvidia abandons older video cards too, they also move to legacy driver their old video cards

if you are going to trow away that video card, tell me where

Hi every one thanks for your help, thanks for the link muungwana very interesting didn't know kernel 2.6.32.8 was even released yet.
The ATI card works well on Windows T6, I have an older Nvidia FX5200 in a lower spec pc that manages compositing using kernel 2.6.32.7, would take it out and put in best pc but it has PCI express slot as opposed to agp. , thanks for the offer of taking the card off my hands 
Think my young son may have his eyes on that.

Do not forget to install the corresponding kernel-devel and kernel-source, needed sometimes by DKMS, installing your video driver...

Thanks DeBaas, I will look to check I did that, I may have just downloaded and compiled the kernel, like I did with a vanilla 2.6.32.7 on another pc.
