Error: IsCallerPrivileged() failed
« on: February 07, 2010, 08:11:02 AM »
I have been running PcLinuxOS 2007 for about 12 months now and have a lot of stuff on there, so am not keen on re-installing to upgrade to 2009.2, although I do like the look of it. So what I did was start to update the system using Synaptic update feature. I tried the select all updates, and that came back with loads of dependency problems, can't finds and just didn't want to know, so I started doing a few at a time and rebooting each time it completed.

But now I am having to work in root almost all the time, since none of my media devices will mount as a user. I have tried setting up a new user, and still get the error above. Is there a fix that I can do to put this right? Is there an update I've missed somewhere that would correct this call? Your help would be appreciated.

I doubt that I'll be able to help you, but those who will may need a bit more info:

Are your "media devices" USB devices? Internal optical drives? Internal hard disk partitions? All of the above?

Do they have entries in /etc/fstab or are they mounted by HAL?

Is the haldaemon running?

If you create temporary mountpoints for them, can you mount them manually from the CLI?

Edit:

If your 2007 install hadn't been kept updated before you recently started to upgrade it, that may well be the reason for your problem. The original 2007 install is simply too old. But note that if your /home directory is on a partition of its own, you can retain most of your settings and data even if you reinstall.

It's seems to be solved now! I changed the repo directories and tried the update again and this time it did the whole lot without any problems!

It's perhaps a little bit of a time waster really, since the new relase will be out in a couple of weeks, but at least I can get the backups done sensibly now, without having to use the root account to burn disks. Thanks for taking the time to reply too.

Actually, the old 2007 has been very stable and one of the best OS's I've had in a long time, and the updates I've made to now had been selective, since I run apache web server, Mysql and a host of other things on here all the time, using it as my website development pc. The idea of a re-install is daunting, but now I can get everythiong backed up, it's not so bad!
