Dual Boot?

I would like to install PCLinuxOS on my new Windows 7 Laptop, but on trying out the PCL/OS 2009.2 disk, I have found there is no sound, but I have found an old 2009 PCLinuxOS disk, the one with all the old Icons at log in, (I love the one where the penguin rides the crocodile) and with this disk the sound works!
My problem now is, if I do install this old version of PCLinuxOS 2009, can I upgrade it without losing the sound?
Any suggestions?

I would check with PCC --> Hardware --> Browse and configure hardware --> Soundcard on the disk that works, to see what driver module is being used. Write it down. Then boot the 2009.2 disk and set up the soundcard to use the same module, in PCC --> Hardware --> Sound Configuration. Check to be sure the sound isn't muted in kmix.

I did as you suggested and as far as I can tell, the sound card drives are exactly the same,  Intel HDA driver, (snd_hda_intel [ALSA] ).

The only thing that is different, with PCLinuxOS 2009 I just boot normally and with PCLinuxOS 2009.2 I have to SATA probe to get the disk to boot.

O Well, that's the way it goes, or rather the way it doesn't go.

On the desktop of the 2009.2 liveCD is a Utilities directory/folder. Inside is a Setup-Sound-Card.desktop icon. Have you used this to try to set up your sound card?

I have bought the update disks from OnDisk, and if they arrive in time, I will try installing the old PCLinuxOS disk over the weekend and see what happens.

 I have heard they don't send any money to Tex any more, so I will send him a donation from my birthday money

When you say old PCLinuxOS disk, is there a name/volumeID on the disk? If you insert the disk, then open k3b, and right click on the optical device, and choose Media Info, what does it say?

Identifying the actual disk will pretty much tell us whether it can be safely upgraded, or not.

As far as I can tell it's the very first proper  PCLinuxOS 2009, release KDE is 3.5.10 and  K3b is 1.0.5,

It's disk that came with the Linux Format magazine, it's also the disk I used to install PCLinuxOS on my old Laptop, witch is still working, and updating regularly ( despite having to be plugged in all the time, and the screen being held together with bulldog clips )
