How to get VLC back ?
« on: February 04, 2010, 03:48:48 AM »
As per another post, to try and resolve another issue I upgraded xcb via synaptic,
it removed vlc to do so.
Since the upgrade of xcb did not resolve my issue, can I "roll it back"?
alternatively being allegedly up to date according to Synaptic how can I re-install VLC ?
If I attempt it I get the below, is there more debugging I can / should do and is this techically a broken package if it will not work with the xcb available from synaptic.

Could not mark all packages for installation or upgrade
The following packages have unresolvable dependicies.
Make sure that all required repositories are added and enabled in the preferences.

vlc:
 Depends: vlc-plugin-mad
 Depends: vlc-plugin-a52
 Depends: vlc-plugin-ogg
 Depends: vlc-plugin-theora
 Depends: libvlccore.so.2
 Depends: libvlc.so.2
Depends: libxcb-keysyms.so.0  but it is not installable

I have exactly the same problem.  I've been checking Synaptic nearly every day since the update, hoping that something has been done, but so far there haven't been any updates since then, let alone anything to get VLC back.  My partial workaround has been to install the Windows version of VLC through WINE, but that doesn't seem to prevent the screen from going black periodically.  Whatever element that normally tells the machine that it shouldn't send the screen to power-saving mode doesn't seem to be present when I run VLC through WINE, and I do not know a way around that.

I hope someone will comment, but it does not look hopeful,

seems to suggest if you have a problem now (in 2009 based 3.5) you will not see a fix without moving / replacing with KDE4?
Though I am still struggling with whether I am 2009 or 2010, from other answers I see that I am 2010 but from other postings infer that 2010 is not "real" yet and will only be KDE4 ?

Turn off the power saving mode in Linux.
