PCLOS 2010 Installation Walkthrough [Custom LiveDVD]
« on: February 05, 2010, 06:18:49 AM »
Hi all,
Here is an attachment of my PCLOS Installation Walkthrough Guide that will help users only by the DVD I have created.
There are lot of things that need to be changed.
First please read through and point out the mistakes and English grammar problems if there are any. If it goes well, I will change the subject to install from a "tex" version.

First try and tell me if it is useful for the community. Then i can modify

Version 0.2 released. The first version of pdf uploaded on first week of February went out with 90 downloads. Very good.
Now thanks to user "oldschool" we both have involved to release a 2nd version of the document. Lot of correction thanks to 'oldschool'.
Please feel free to download and view the document.

This time only in PDF format

Thank You! ;D

Tim

Hi Tommylee567
Just what I am looking for.   I can see you know the stuff but the grammar could benefit by polishing.
If anyone wants to comment how would you prefer feedback, on the forum, by PM or ?
Issues that I feel uncertain about and you may want to cover are-
If I want a PCLOS only install, what are the pros and cons of one, or 2, or 3, or more partitions, what should they be, in what order, and how to ensure they are properly labeled/mounted?
How to share a hard drive with more than one Linux distro?
and, just for curiosity, is there an easy way to put a W partition on after installing Linux?

Hi Lucky Blue and welcome to the forums.

To try and answer your question(s) basically, you might try searching around on google for blog posts for this type of advanced stuff. A tutorial for the type of in depth information could be a bit hit and miss given your exact requirements.

Having only one partition can be a little nerve racking for some linux users because the home directory is tied to the root directory and that means if the home directory runs out of space, there is a chance your system can be screwed up because it has a lack of space to function correctly.

However, if you are distro hopping, then having everything on one partition makes the process easy to manage provided you are careful with disk space and/or aren't worried about the risk of damaging a system.

Mounting other directories on separate partitions is normally done on servers so the data can be put on a separate device to the system data for space and security reasons. But with such big drives now and easy backup solutions, most desktop users now-a-days generally have two partitions: / (root) and ~ (home).

You should have faith in the PClinuxOS installer to take care of that for you.

How to share a hard drive with more than one Linux distro?
This takes some trial and error and depends heavily on the installer of the distros that will occupy the drive. Remember to backup any data you care about and keep that data well away from the computer you are working on. The main problem you can have is unexpected results of the installer of the distro that is sharing the disk with something installed previously.

I recommend having a spare drive which you can slot in and experiment with the installers of your distros. Get confident by moving the systems around from partitions to figure out what methods you like to use. A live CD can have all the tools you need to play around with partitions.

Not really. Windows likes to format a drive and have it all to itself. A distro's installer comes along later and creates space for linux from the unused space left on the drive. Windows isn't much into caring and sharing disk space unfortunately. It -may- be possible for you to copy/transfer a working windows partition onto a drive with linux on it. Most users would never bother tho.

At any time ask for help on the forum if you don't know how to do something. For a big job like installing multiple distos, I'd suggest posting a your intentions a few days before you are going to attempt it. Write about what you have got such as hardware/software and what you would like to do. The community members then have time to work though your strategy and avoid trying to clean up a mess.  ;)

And the result? You'll get your tutorial (as a work in progress). You get your system the way you want it. And we all get to learn something.  :)

Enjoy your stay.

thanks F.Luent.
Tommylee may be able to make use of your material in his guide.
I am building up my knowledge in anticipation of a complete HDD wipe and re-install - my pc is working tho' there are some peculiar things happening, due I think mainly to installing a few outside RPMs, now removed.
Objective - study and think before hitting keys, follow instructions, deviate from instructions only when understanding what is going on rather than panic pressing of keys to get something happening.
Oh 'requirements' - not really the right word - my questions for example on partitions, is not because I want 2 or 20 or a certain number, but how do you determine the best number? I suspect it is a question like setting the size of the swap partition.
So, my new system clean install will be done right next time (famous last words?).
Thanks again

Whatever you decide you'll wish you had allowed more for the partition that's maxing out at 99.9% usage. Anyone who tells you they can estimate partition usage precisely is either lying or not using their computer properly.   ;)

Thanks for the reply to Lucky Blue. Shall i change the document to the "tex" version of PCLOS 700MB CD? The current document is based on my LiveDVD.
And please spot out mistakes here. I can correct them.

Lucky Blue
It is upto you how you install PCLOS. I just wanted the user to know how much basic is needed for a custom pclos install, and it came around 10 GB for the root partition. Beyond that, it is upto you that should decide.
If you want to you can contact me through PM. I'm only available on Weekends. If you can, you are free to modify the .doc file and upload.

Thanks all!
Tim

I dunno.  ???

Why don't you leave it as it is for now and when the new official 2010 release comes out you could repost it accordingly.  :)

Tim,

I PM'd you a grammatically revised copy of your walkthrough, but, unfortunately, lost a good deal of the formatting in the PM'ing process. Despite this one glitch, I think you'll find it flows somewhat better for the native English speaking crowd. A fairly nice walkthrough. Keep up the good work.

Mmmmmm..... Yep
Goody idea!

But other new forum users coming here will read and think "Is this how the downloaded 700MB will be?".
Because of that thought I asked you. OK- will wait for the new one

Thanks!

Tim,

I just got a look at the newly revised and reformatted walkthrough. You won't have native English speakers stumbling over the grammer any more. While, not entirely perfect (I am not a professional editor, nor proofreader), it is very readable, nonetheless.  Good luck and best wishes for a smashing success with your walkthrough.

Whatever that is, you are also a part of doing the work. So you also should be mentioned. The doc looks nice after a revision.
Thanks Bro! :)

Suggestions:

More on how to boot a "live cd" - When a computer boots from cold the first screen to flash up for a second will say something like (they all vary slightly):

F2=setup      F12=boot

Press F12 or whatever it says to select the dvd/cdrom as the boot device, put in the disk and press enter.
If the only option is the setup screen go into this and use the arrow keys and page up/page down keys to find and change the boot order to cdrom first.

Updating and Installing Software - You should use Synaptic to update your system and to install new software. Look for this icon [synaptic icon] and you will be asked for the root/administrator password.

Once started first change to the repository nearest to you. From the top menu select Setting > Repositories and ensure ONLY ONE REPOSITORY IS SELECTED. There is a utility to show you the best repository for you called [ cant remember, instructions]. Having done this press the Reload button in the top left corner which will update the information on packeges available for the system. Once done press the Select All Upgrades and then apply as many time as necessary.

Once done press the Reload button in the top left corner again to refresh the information on packages available.

Now press the Sections button in the bottom left and browse for any software you wish to install. Highlight with the mouse and press Enter to select for install (or right click). Once you have chosen the Apply button at the top will light up. Press it and keep pressing apply until it starts going.

Subject to the laws of your juridiction you may wish to add codecs such as win32codecsall, lame and libdvdcss (use the search function to locate).

Observations:

Lots of useful tips in the wiki, which is hidden away.

There is an installation Howto in the Howtoforge web site

And there are lots of good videos on the main web page

Question:

If I have an existing /home directory how do I stop the installer from formatting it and destroying the contents. Presume you use and format the existing root partition for /, and mount /existing home and pay it is not obliterated.

otherwise copy backup file and chown -R tim:tim /home/tim to put it back

Tim,

Thanks, for your kind words and the thankful, humble spirit you demonstrate. Yes, I revised some of the language to help English speakers, but the real work is yours. Having taught children, I know how hard it is to create a lesson (or walkthrough) that is useful and that stays on topic. You are to be commended for that. Truly, this is your work.

I have no other words than "THANK YOU"

Boot options vary from motherboard to motherboard. Also lot of things written were to guide people on the installation process. Not beyond that.
The desktops and resolution changing of monitors were to be just a glimpse of running the os. That is all.

If you want to add something i will try.

Signing off. meet you in the weekend
