Hulu (Firefox and X) now takes 66-100% cpu
« on: February 04, 2010, 05:44:43 PM »
So, I haven't used hulu since early December.  Used to be smooth at full screen.  Now its jerky, even at the small screen.  So what gives ???

Watching SG-1 Season 10  :  Ep. 20

I also noticed on the  'Network Monitoring'  that there are large gaps in the upload download with the sending/receiving regularly dropping to 0B/s

Speedtest.net gives me:-

Ping 124ms
Download - 9.86Mb/s
Upload - 0.93Mb/s

What has changed since you last used it?  I found some info here> http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,64825.15.html  that might be of use.  Good luck.

It may be a flash upgrade.  I'm seeing complaints on other Linux versions.

Would it be possible to have an option to go back to 9.0.48 ?

I am using 10.0.42.34 with no problems. Lots of things could be the issue. Video card, ram, ISP, wireless connection, is it raining?  ??? (that's a joke, sorry)  Like I said, Good luck. Somebody smarter than me will have some help. Hang in there!

That's why I said maybe.

I tried Tex's tips here.   http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,64825.15.html

It got more sluggish, jerky so I   rm /etc/adobe/mms.cfg the file and restarted.

Back to the original, still sluggish/jerky now.

With the firefox/hulu window closed, but 3 other tabs open, top shows:-

PID     USER        PR  NI  VIRT  RES    SHR S   %CPU %MEM    TIME+    COMMAND
7431   marrandy  20   0  366m 183m  32m S    0       6.0        2:03.51  firefox
1824   root         15  -5  0        0       0 S        0       0.0       0:00.33   kondemand/1
5854   root         20   0  365m  27m  8528 S    0       0.9       0:41.91   X

I also tried a later kernel.  Its the same.

Forget the older flash now.

Hulu now requires 10.0.22 or higher.

Bizairre...I went into system-configuration-nvidia settings, turned DFP-0 scaling off, went and watched the video fullscreen, turned it back on, back to video, still OK at fullscreen

Go figure.

Another quirk.

Its still showing the high cpu on firefox & X though.

Oop's...spoke too soon.

Its happening again and using the Nvidia control didn't help this time.

So people...run firefox with something innocuous like google.  Go into your shell and run top and check what X & firefox are using CPU-wise.  Then open another tab and go to hulu.com and play

Watching SG-1 Season 10  :  Ep. 20    (just for consistency).

Check top again and make a note of the CPU figures and please post them here.

If you could also add  uname -a

X = 7.3%
firefox = 8.6%
hulu destop = 73.2%

uname -a  = Linux laptop 2.6.27.31.tex5 #1 SMP Fri Sep 11 14:35:27 CDT 2009 i686 Mobile AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 3400+ GNU/Linux

The video is smooth wither in full screen mode or not.  Gkrellm show cpu usage at 92% and I have noticed my cpu temperature jumped from 90 degrees F to 136.4 degrees F. Wait it just hit 140 degrees F. Rather high I think. Within 30 seconds after stopping hulu desktop the temperature has dropped down to 114.4 degrees F.

If I go to hulu.com and try watching the same video Top shows the following

x = 9.56% usage
firefox = 49.9% usage
and the cpu temperature stays around 123.8 degrees F.
Gkrellm shows a cpu usage of 62% +/- 5

If I go full screen the video is smooth but the cpu usage goes high into the mid 90's and the cpu temp jumps to 140 degrees. Once I leave full screen mode the temperature drops back into the mid 120's and the cpu usage drops back to the mid 50's lower 60's in cpu usage

Hope that helps you out

I belatedly went into my pretty much unused Vista Home as I have dual boot.

Tried the latest Firefox.

They were similar in CPU useage until I tried the SG-1 flash video.  On Vista, it was between 37 & 46% whereas pclinuxos was hitting the high 80's and with X it was maxing out.  This was full screen.

I still say something has changed with flash since November as I could watch these fullscreen without any jerking previously.

Its weird seeing windows work better on the same hardware as linux.  I have never seen that before.  In this case, PCLinuxOS with firefox and flash is using twice the CPU of vista for the same video.
