DigiKam Fails To Initialize On A User Setting.
« on: February 04, 2010, 04:51:56 PM »
DigiKam Version 1........Fails To Initialize On A User Setting.

On a Acer laptop 5738z (2.6.26.8 tex3 KDE4.3.4 ) with root and two users settings.

On root and one user setting digiKam works but on the other user setting it will not now open/initialize (it did work ok last week for the first time it was used.)
All it does is bring the first image up (the one with a camera lens on )  and that's it.
I have tried a complete removal in synaptic and re-install, but just the same.
Trying to open it with a terminal gives 'cannot find, no such file etc.'

Any idea's please.

Try to open DigiKam in a terminal using the direct path, /usr/bin/digikam
Sometimes you have something in your path called digikam, which the terminal opens instead of the real one.

Could be the digikam settings specific to that user...check
Quote
~/.kde4/share/apps/digikam
~/.kde4/share/config/digikamrc

not sure which file is relevant, I just did a
Code: [Select]
locate to find them...

...well, the first appears to be a directory, and it's empty on my install.  The other appears to be the configuration file...I would suggest renaming (or moving) it, instead of deleting it, just in case.

There should be a database with digikam as well (which stores all your image's locations) (digimak4.db, I think).  Getting that to recreate may help, also (but, digikam will have to rescan your library, again).

In 'konsole'   I get this, and digiKam just reacts like it did before.

 $ /usr/bin/digikam
Xlib:  extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".

Then I Terminated it.

~/.kde4/share/apps/digikam    is the details of the camera you get your photo's from, I left this alone.

~/.kde4/share/config/digikamrc  I changed this to 'old' but after re-booting and it recreated it self digiKam still acts the same.
I did the same with the .db files , but no change.
Using 'synaptic' to uninstall digikam there are lots of files left on the hard drive, How do I completely get rid of these to start a fresh.?.

Xlib:  extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".

pclinmike, this message is not critical (Tex posted about this some time ago) and will go away when the 2010 release with the new Xorg version is out.

Let the program continue to load. If it fails, some other (critial) message will appear and then maybe we'll know more.

It seems then to be a user setting if it works in other users, so the problem is in some of the user files.

I would rename the relevant user files (mentioned above) and then launch the application from the terminal .........  the app should recreate the files it needs that you have renamed.

But that's what I've been doing and it still does not work, just hangs.
When it creates the new config file it's very small compared with the one in the other user setting.

It looks like the only way was to re-create the users account settings in pcc and calling the users home folder 'old' because using the original folder the same thing happened to digikam by hanging.

I did try deleting any digikam files in the first home folder and also KDE4 folder and rebooting but
theirs something corrupted in that first home folder .

Now whats the best way to move the configuration files over to the new home folder ? without introducing some corrupted files.

Or have we got to set Firefox, Thunderbird, desktop etc. again.
