Welcome to the forum.

It sounds as if you have a problem with your video card driver or settings.

Try logging in as root and then type "video" and press Enter. This will bring up the tool for selecting your video card driver and settings. You can navigate around this with your arrow, tab and Enter keys. Once you have it set up to match your card and monitor you can test it to make sure all is well. You will get a vertical rainbow pattern if it's OK. Then type "service dm restart && exit" <Enter>.

If all is well you will get the desktop log-in screen.

Hopefully all will now be well. If not we will need to investigate more fully, which needs more info, such as hardware details and exactly how you have it set up.

Not unless there's a problem which would need investigating.

What do you mean by "getting worse"?

There are a number of things you can try and a number of steps you might be able to take either to fix it or to investigate why it doesn't work in order to fix it.

From what you have written so far it seems compositing became unstable and was disabled, the X (the GUI) failed to start and you were left at a text log-in.

Later you mentioned that this happened after an upgrade. Now you say it's getting worse.

Please be more specific.

Let's start at the beginning. Is this a new install or have you been using it for long enough to have data or settings you don't want to lose? If it's new a re-install won't hurt. If it's highly customised you might want to try to save it. That's the first decision to take.

There are certain things anyone re-installing should be aware of:

1. The 2009.2 iso has reached the end of its life and cannot easily be upgraded from the repository. If you install from that don't try to add anything. Just use the basic system as it comes for now.

2. There is a more recent LXDE version which I believe can still be upgraded to current, but will probably not be upgradeable any further. Also, if you want to add KDE to it you will have to search the forum for the safe way to do it.

3. A new iso is coming, with betas in the next couple of weeks leading to final in the next few months. When this comes out it is recommended everyone re-installs, so there's probably not much point working on your installation until that is available. This will be the first re-install for three years, which tends to be the life span of pclos installs.

Depending on your circumstances you might want to try to fix your current install, re-install now, or just wait a few weeks for the new version and re-install then.

I hope that puts things into a useful perspective.
