HPLIP Problem

When I plug in my HP LaserJet P1006 printer, I get the message that it needs a plug in.
My printer won't print.

I go to HPSetup, and it says I need HPLip installed, and it has a lengthy list of operating st and printers and such.
When I choose PCLinux OS, and go on with the process, it turns out that there is no plugin for PCLinux's latest distro.

I tried a manual install (twice) and I am not counted as  having root privileges when I sudo in.  If I log in as root, it's O.K., but part of the process cant be done as root.  At any rate, it doesn't work for me.

Can anyone tell me how to do this right?  It was working on my last installation, but now I'm just stuck and don't know where to go.

I guess I need step by step instructions written for a very slow, helmet wearing guy riding in the back seat of the short-short bus.

Is anyone willing to walk me through this?

  If I understand you right .
 Just go into the package manager (synaptic ) and click on search
 in the search type in HPlip and then click search -  then click on HPlip and then right click and click mark for installation
 then click apply and then click apply again.
 Let the package download and install.

It's shown as installed in Synaptic.
When I try to run it, it goes to a web browser, which says "Page not available."

I don't understand what you mean by this.

Have you tried this:
Click on the Launcher (PC button) go to System>Terminals>Terminal Program-Super User Mode

Type your root password in the popup window, hit OK

When the terminal opens, type hp-setup, hit Enter, follow the instructions.

Well, I saw many posts regarding hplip. What I don't understand is, why one should play in Terminal to make his/her printer going? I have a all-in-one c5200 and it works like a charm ::)

Is it really necessary?

Yep.  Doing it in Terminal worked.  It wouldn't recognize the HP p1006 without doing it that way.
I guess every printer is unique.
