(SOLVED) KDE4 Home network
« on: February 02, 2010, 06:22:49 PM »
Seems like I go through this with every new Linux install.:) And I'm too dense to remember how folks helpd me the last time around.

KDE 4.

Samba is running

The user name name is "mark" on the desktop system and "markl" on the laptop.

i changed the workgroup name to NEWPC on the new desktop.

I tried sharing a desktop system folder but the laptop does not see the shared folder. What am I not toggling on or off?

Mark, both PCs see the network "NEWPC" right? You just need to "Share" the folders that you want. Go to "Control Center/ Network Sharing....  I think.  I always have to fumble through this stuff myself.  ;D

Rudge,

I found the answer.:)  Marking this solved.:) I did a serch on the forum and found the thread from the last time.  Altair4 and others provided the solution:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,60577.msg489385.html#msg489385

Simply,  I needed to name my desktop computer.  I did this. I rebooted both and the network came up. Now sharingthe dsktop files wit th elaptop through the aptp.

Only question is, where is there a network folder in KDE4?  I'm used to placing the Network Folders icon on a panel in KDE3.5. Looking for similar in KDE4.

Mark, it looks like you could add a "Folder View" widget to the panel, and then configure it to show that folder.  If you need steps to do this, say so.  ;)

Thanks, rudge.:) I'll give that a look.:)  Sounds like it's the solution.:)  I'll probably tackle it tomorrow.:) Gotta get my dog inside and then that's it for the night.:)

EDIT -- heck, gonna do it now!:) I see the Network icon in dolphin now (duh..dummy me!).  Use folder view and hook into that.:)

Hmmm...the laptop can see the desktop system, but not the other way around. I checked services on the laptop and Samba is running. i also have a shared folder on the laptop. I also rebooted just to be sure.

I wish I knew a sure fire way to get it to work. Seems to me that I always just arrive at a working network by happenstance. I am never really sure of what I did to make it work. I just fumble around until suddenly, it's working.  ??? ???  Frustrating!

It's probably one of those things that's right under my nose. ;D

Both systems probably only require a complete shut down and then starting back up anew.

But networking is working.  I can jump on the laptop and see the shared folder on the desktop system.

The laptop can access the main desktop system.  The main desktop system just isn't seeing the laptop.

Both are PCLinuxoS, in case I forgot to mention this.
