Amarok crashes when launched from Dolphin
« on: February 02, 2010, 12:10:10 PM »
I was testing to see if Dolphin was still crashing after I re-installed key KDE components. Dolphin seems to be working now, but Amarok crashes, seems only when launched from Dolphin. Amarok works when launched directly.

I've just discovered something similar.  I was sorting some mp3 files on an mp3 player in Dolphin when I must have accidentally tried to open one (my mouse sometimes gives gratuitous double clicks!).  The Amarok startup screen appeared, but nothing else.  The device disappeared from the screen, and I could not read any removable memory via my USB ports after this until I re-booted.  They were just not recognised, but the usb mouse and wifi adaptor still worked.  This has happened twice this evening.  (After the next re-boot I shall remove Amarok and use Kaffeine or something else.)
How does one become a hero?  By asking a lot of dumb questions apparently! I have three computers of various ages, the most powerful is a Dell Netbook 10v; each has 2 or 3 versions of PCLOS of various vintages.  Location, St John's, Newfoundland.

So when You click on the mp3 file it opens in the amarok and then amarok crashes? BUT if You open amarok and then click on the mp3 file it is opening / playing ok?

And if You play with multimedia files like video or mp3 of any kind Your dolphin crashes on exit?

Never heard of this issue before... ;)

First rule of the forum - Search ;)...

1st search phrase I used was: amarok crashes mp3
2nd search phrase I used was: dolphin crashes multimedia

Hope this helps :)

Yes any audio file OGG and FLAC. I don't have any mp3 files. Amarok will not work if I open a file in dolphin and select Amarok. It will crash every single time. But Dolphin still crashes when I close it if I do anything at all with an audio file. Amarok will work just fine with no problem what-so-ever when I open it directly and try to play a file.

Did You clicked on the two links in my previous post? Both of these issues are already being discussed on the forum and I believe some of it may be gone after the fresh install when 2010 iso is out. I think both of the issue were reported on the KDE forum by Texstar. Bugs are being "worked on" and KDE4 will improve over the next few months and it will be better and better with every single upgrade.

All this probably works under KDE4.4 - but I have no way of testing it, but here are some results of my further experimentation in KDE4.3.  Just for information, as it extends anything I have found by searching.  Thanks to AndrzejL for showing me (in words!) the alternative way to change file association priorities - the one that works.  ( http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,68489.0.html )

As Stealth says, other players (I've checked: Kaffeine, Mplayer, and Audacity) all crash when a file is double clicked on in Dolphin.  If you right click and then select any of the above from the "Open with" list, all work, but Dolphin crashes.

I've checked all these with .mp3 and only Kaffeine with .ogg file, but it behaved in the same way.

So the problem is not specific to Amarok, but seems to involve some "higher authority", either Dolphin or KDE4.3 itself.

Using Konqueror, (less thoroughly), the behaviour is the same, (i.e double click crashes player, right click and "Open with" is OK for both .mp3 and .ogg,)  except that Konqueror doesn't crash itself.

My conclusion from this is that the problem is most likely in KDE4.3, and since Tex says it's fixed for Amarok in KDE4.4 we can hope this applies to all the others too.
