It doesn't matter what you originally installed, if you are fully updated, you are on 2010. This installation was originally from a TR5 test release, before the 2009 final release. It's fully upgraded so is now 2010, in it's current form.

You can upgrade through apt-get directly, but that is still the same as using Synaptic, which is just a front end GUI application for apt. Unless you know exactly what you are doing with apt-get, you can make a mess of things much easier than with Synaptic, which is why Synaptic is the officially supported way to do your upgrades.

so in theory I'm up to date.
How is KDE4 going to be handled, will we get a choice ?
For the forseeable future I would prefer to stay with 3.5.

I'm still running KDE3 and will continue to do so for as long as I can. KDE4 will be the default with the new 2010 release, and i don't know what will happen to KDE3 once that is released. We can only wait and see.

And you can check that you are on 2010 hitting PCC and then Help>About. It also shows in Verbose when booting up.
