How do you tell whether you are 2009.0, 2009.1, 2009.2 or ?
apart from the standard way to update/upgrade via synaptic, reload etc is there any other way to upgrade ?
It doesn't matter what you originally installed, if you are fully updated, you are on 2010. This installation was originally from a TR5 test release, before the 2009 final release. It's fully upgraded so is now 2010, in it's current form.
You can upgrade through apt-get directly, but that is still the same as using Synaptic, which is just a front end GUI application for apt. Unless you know exactly what you are doing with apt-get, you can make a mess of things much easier than with Synaptic, which is why Synaptic is the officially supported way to do your upgrades.
