Locks Up During Shutdown
« on: February 02, 2010, 07:34:47 AM »
This morning my system started locking up when shut it down.  It doesn't matter whether I select "Turn Off Computer" or "Restart Computer".

During the last few shutdown attempts I hit the Esc key for verbose mode and the last four entries are as follows:

Shutting down kernel logger:
Shutting down system logger:
Stopping Shorewall...
done.

At this point the process stops.  Last week I replaced the hard drive, reinstalled and updated the software.  It was working fine until this morning.  Does anyone have any idea about this problem?  Thanks in advance.

I haven't received any response to the original post so I have tried reinstalling PCLOS from disk.  I have tried both reinstalling without reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling after formatting the drive.  In both cases everything works fine for a short time, then suddenly it starts locking up during shutdown again.  One would think that a clean installation would solve the problem, but it doesn't.  This leads me to suspect that the problem is introduced into the system when I do a routine update from the repository.

I'm back using Window XP for now, so I really need some help solving this problem.

I don't know if this will help but I found this post. Might be worth a try.

Thanks for the reply.  I just tried that, and it didn't seem to help.  The system still locks up on shutdown.  Thanks again.

Hello: have you tried turning off or un-installing shorewall to see if that remedies the problem? just a thought.

Apart from the re-install, have you tried anything else?

Yes, I think so.  A Google search indicated that Shorewall was a firewall, so I turned off the firewall.  The entry for shutting down Shrorewall from the shutdown screen, but that was the only change.  The program still locks up.  Do you know where I could find the script that tells PCLOS how to shutdown or restart the computer?

I tried turning off the firewall, but that didn't help.  If I could locate the script that tells PCLOS how to shutdown or restart, I could compare the contents before and after the problem shows up.  That might indicate something.  Other than that, I don't know what to try.

Re: Locks Up During Shutdown [UPDATE]
« Reply #8 on: March 20, 2010, 10:23:59 PM »
I think I have identified the problem, but not a final solution.

I realized that a clean install would work fine until I updated the packages.  I tried updating from different repositories, but that didn't help.  I got an idea that maybe only one package was causing the problem, so I tried updating each package individually instead of using the "Mark All Upgrades" button.  After each upgrade I would restart the computer.  Everything worked fine until I reached the package 'fuse'.  After upgrading 'fuse' the computer locked up.  I did a clean install.  (i.e. format the entire drive and install PCLOS.)  I then upgraded 'fuse' from a different repository, and it still caused a lock up.  I then did another clean install, selected "Mark All Upgrades", deselected 'fuse', then hit apply.  The computer is no longer locking up.  According to Synaptic, the installed version of 'fuse' is 2.7.4-2pclos2007, and the latest version is 2.7.4-5pclos2009.  Obviously, the latest version of 'fuse' has a bug that makes it incompatible with my system.

How would I get this information to TEX or whoever it is that would fix this bug?
