« on: February 01, 2010, 10:39:09 PM »

I know it sounds silly but are you sure your DVD burner works?

I just (yesterday) changed the home desktop internal DVD burner, it was acting erratic until it failed.
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

panamahat:

Try burning at a much slower speed.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

I agree with old-polack, try a much slower speed. I have always found that to be more reliable.
There is a 5th dimension,beyond that which is known to man.It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity,between science& superstition,& it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge.This is the dimension of imagination.It is an area which we call PCLINUXOS!

I tried it at every supported speed 18X down to 4X and No Joy.
Below is the debug info at 4X.
I know the burner works fine using Nero in XP. But I need it to work in Linux.
What the heck am I doing wrong?

You may want to try updating the kernel to 2.6.27.31tex5. If that doesn't help, you can always revert to the older kernel if you prefer it, but it helped a K3b problem on one of my boxes.

Are you burning files larger than the capacity of the disk?  Sometimes this happens in K9copy.  If you don't size the image correctly, it'll bomb out.  It sees the image as, say 5 gigs, and the disk as being 4.7 gigs and then just stops.

I know it's simplistic and rather obvious, but sometimes small things get overlooked.
Toonfully,

If none of the above works, try making sure DAO (disk-at-once) is selected.  I had some issues recently that were fixed by setting that.  Not sure why.

hi,
i too had problems with my computer when it came to burning. A problem made worse by my "newness" to both linux & burning (lived without a computer & tv for over 5 years, still no tv but now i rarely get to bed before midnight because of the dvd's i watch on this computerizer!).

Anyhoo, i was also making coasters until i tried 2 things;

1. BEFORE i select my burn speed i put in a blank disk & wait until the computer/software finds it. What i mean is that there are alot more selections for burn speed before i put in the disk, afterward the computer reads the disk there are alot less & if i choose a speed that is no longer on this "new" list, it will burn me a coaster.

2. I select the second slowest speed. I would prefer the slowest speed for reliability (after all i am not pumping out multiple copies so i can afford to wait), but if i select the slowest i get yet another coaster.

Now i get good copies each time, however i still get butterflies in my stomach when i need to use Brasero which gave me all these coasters (my 1st burning software), despite the fact i now know it was my newbness that caused me all that grief. I even had to download gnomebaker each time i tried a new linux gnome distro!

hope it works out for you, i was where you are now & i feel your pain...

These symptoms are familiar to me... Especially, when someone is smoking around the running computer... Most likely, the small lens above the laser diode is dirty. Try to clean it. Best results - Q-Tip and ammonia water solution.

Hope this helps. ;)
