SMB Sharing[SOLVED]
« on: February 01, 2010, 05:44:49 AM »
Back on 3.5 I used to NEVER have any trouble setting up shares on my server. But, in 4 I cannot get the drive sharing under PCC to "retain" a username.

Method I always/trying to use:
1- Open PCC
2- Go to Local Drives & click "Share hard disk partitions"
3- Select "Allow All users"

...Ok, I gotta add this in. I never came across a prompt where its asking me to setup the samba server. Only in KDE4 have I encountered this. So, Im assuming its a NEW thing? Well, I pretty much dont configure anything in it except selecting, "standalone service". I never came across it before in 3.5. So, being unsure what to do. I just wont fiddle with it much.

Method Cont'd.:
4- Still in PCC. Go to Network Sharing
5- Click "share drives & directories with SMB systems
6- Go under Samba users tab and click ADD
7- I always just use the default entries. Nobody & my login username

I only use the default entries because other than me transferring files to my home folder under my username. The nobody one is only for streaming media to a windows pc and to my own linux pc. I just like this method. It was simple for me.

8- Click File Shares tab & Click ADD
9- Setup the desired directories to share over the LAN

Well, this is the method I've always used. But, I went over all this as I would like some ideas over what might be being done wrong. As, I cant seem to get the Nobody & Username entries to STAY in the Samba users list. Everytime I add these entries and then go to set them to a desired share. I get an error saying "create this user". Then when I go back under the samba user tab. The entries are gone!

Its pretty frustrating and Im wondering what may be the cause and what options I have to rectify this.

Well, I see this is'nt going anywhere. So, Im gonna close it as "SOLVED" because all of a sudden. Its now working.

Im not 100% sure as to what happened that it started working. And that SMB4K started seeing the shares and letting me mount them. Only thing I can say happened that MIGHT be the resolution. Was that my machines were rebooted due to a power outage. Please note that I never had to reboot my machines before in order to start using shares. So, thats why I am not completely sure if the reboot was what really made them start working.

But since no one else seems to have any ideas. I dont think theres much point keeping this thread open. So, I'll set it to "SOLVED by reboot".

Edit:
I neglected to mention that I did try another method of enabling the share before the reboot took place. This method was done through the "Configure Your Desktop" option. Under Advanced and then System. Theres a "Samba" option there that works almost like the one in PCC. Except that the interface and options it gives are alot more "detailed".

I was able to get the usernames & desired shares to remain in the fields here. So, I will assume that this method replaces the one I always been using on KDE3.5. Which I am fine with. I actually like it better. But, it still did not allow me to instantly start using shares. As it would back under 3.5.

So, if anyone has an issue similar to mine. Just go through "Configure Your Desktop" instead of PCC to select your shares & set your users for them. And then reboot that machine. Thats all I can surmise is the fix. Unless any devs or advanced users might have a better idea as to what may have happened.

i think its necessary to start samba after any change is made to its configuration files because they are read once at start time. After samba is restarted, it is usually wise to wait for around five minutes to let changes to propagate around the network

Restarting your computer was not necessary but restarting of samba was.

I am glad you solved your own problem ... happy file sharing
