Update of Thunderbird (via Firefox)

I updated my version of Firefox in PCLinux, using Synaptic, but I did not get the latest version (3.6) for some reason, but only 3.5.6. Although I downloaded the latest version of Firefox manually I cannot seem to install it outside Synaptic. However without my asking for it when I installed Firefox 3.5.6 via Synaptic I also got my Thunderbird e-mail updated to v 3, and in doing this my mail folders and other aspects became corrupted! Indeed so much so that Thunderbird will not now run properly at all. It has clearly corrupted the import process completely.  Every time I start it up now it goes through the import process 4 or 5 times failing on each occasion. It also then finally gives the error messages for each of my e-mail addresses that it cannot find the passwords! I thus now cannot receive any e-mail. Has anyone else experienced this?

I don't know why PCLinux still makes Thunderbird the default e-mail utility since it is generally acknowledged to be rubbish and unreliable. Evolution is much better.  When I originally attempted to import from Outlook Express Thunderbird would not work properly and corrupted my folders and other parameters. I also could not import my account details and had to set them manually then.

Can anyone advise me please how to retrieve this situation with my e-mail, and how you can install the latest version of Firefox?

That is because 3.5.x is the most current version.  If you haven't read the forum yet. There are no update until the 2010 version is released, which should be anytime.

As for Thunderbird, I had no problem from 2.xx to 3.xx   The only thing was the annoying part of Thunderbird trying to figure what the mail server was.  It took it forever but it did eventually figure it out. Would of been a whole lot faster just to input it all manually.

Acknowledged by who?  I've used it for years and years, on both Windows and Linux and never had a problem.

I have used Thunderbird for my gmail account for a few years now and it works great. When I updated to Thunderbird 3.0 I didn't have to change a single setting. I didn't have to import anything. It just worked like the 2.x series. I was a little surprised to see a few folks having a problem with it.

Then, I realize that Firefox is okay as long as I have not started Thunderbird.  Once I start Thunderbird and send an email - after I've done a drag-n-drop into the email, that's when Firefox will gray and hang.  When this occurs, I cannot shut down, I cannot load System Guard, I cannot terminate Firefox... thank goodness for the power button!



I verified that I have to send an email from Thunderbird to cause my issues.  As noted earlier, the first indication of a problem is the Mouse Scroll stops functioning.  Then, Thunderbird started to gray, I immediately killed TB with System Guard.  Now Firefox appears to be stable, however the Mouse Scroll is not functioning.  I will shut Firefox down and restart without a reboot.  If it comes up normally, I will report back...

New info:  When TB trips and causes this hang, IMWHEEL heads to the top of my CPU usage at 20+ %.  Now, here is the fun part, if I kill IMWHEEL, my mouse scroll starts working properly... and Firefox appears stable.

I must add +1 but I must remember the gtk-qt-engine / gtk-oxygen-moldecule "Thunderbird is already running..." - that was the only thing that ever bothered me...

It may be because I  have quite a few multiple accounts? I have since discovered that Firefox seemed to corrupt in the same update, and now whenever I click on the icon once to start it I get two iterations attempting to start, once of which then bombs out after about 2 or 3 minutes of the attempt.

I have now also discovered that my scanner is no longer recognised by Xsine since this update, and although I have attempted to reinstall it I still cannot get it recognised. So it is clear that this update corrupted my system in a number of ways. Probably I shall now have to re-install PCLinuxOS and NOT update subsequently to get back to a situation of stability?

Does any expert have any suggestions please?
