Broken Synaptic

I am running kernel  2.6.26.8.tex3   I didn't do an upgrade, and was previously running PCLos 2009   --    but it seems I am now running PCLos 2010.  Anyway, the problem I am having is when I go into Synaptic, and I click on reload, then Mark All Upgrades.....I get nothing to upgrade.  The Apply button stays grayed out.  I have gone to a terminal and typed apt-get update, and then apt-get dist-upgrade  commands to try it there, and I get the same....nothing to update.  This has been going on for several weeks now. And I know there are upgrades more often than this. I am very regular at doing upgrades, but it has been at least three weeks since I have gotten any upgrades.  Any hints at what might be the problem?

Oh, I should mention, on the repository page, Distribution says....PCLinux 2007  and I have noticed, almost all the packages now say...either 2009 or 2010.

The original plan was to simply update 2009 through 2010. Due to the complex issues and user intervention required to go to new kernel 2.6.32.4, udev, hal, initscripts, plymouth bootsplash, speedboot, xorg, compiz 3D, nvidia/fglrx drivers, ext 4 default file system, KDE 4.4 it is easier for me to provide a new ISO with a 2010 repository in a couple of weeks than to spend 3-4 months trying to work up some kind of valid upgrade path that probably be more trouble to the end user than it is worth. Once we get everyone on 2010 we can keep rolling along with updates again.

It will be a one-time thing, afterward we'll keep rolling along, but the cut simply has to be made.

Had you looked at other recent posts you would have seen that all updates stopped on Jan. 8 to prepare for the 2010 release. It will probably be after Feb. 9, when KDE 4.4 is released that any upgrades will be available. Synaptic is not broken.

Thank you very much, I was worried I had done something wrong or that I broke something. I shall stop worrying now and just sit back and be patient.

Everyone is always so helpful to newbies like me who worry when things don't look or act the same as they did.

Will this update switch to KDE 4 I mean, i am very happy with 3.5.10. KDE 4 i pass. Will this upgrade version  force us to switch to KDE 4

No one is "Forcing" anyone to do anything, but if you decide to download the new ISO. and install it, (once it is available) I do believe that kde4 will be the default desktop.
This is, however, a bit off topic.

"Don't fix if ain't broken", doesn't this tell anything I mean, KDE 3.5 works gr8. KDE 4 i am not so confident. And, as some of my hardware is really crap, i don't think it will work as good as K 3.5...

But KDE 3.5 is broken in the sense that it's unmaintained and therefore vulnerable to security exploits.

The current version of KDE is 4.3.4, soon to be 4.4. It is more secure than 3.5 with a well-known "social-engineering" (=deception) exploit plugged.

You don't know it won't run well on your hardware. You're just guessing. If you're right there are plenty of other choices.

I am amazed at how emotional people get over a desktop version. it's just a newer, more flexible version of what you already know.

And if it can run on my hardware at 1920x1080 it doesn't need high-end stuff. My current box cost just £150 ($230) new.

It's because i live in ExpensiveLand, here we have low wages and everything is expensive... My main computer is a Sempron from 2005, and works gr8 with K3.
With K 4 i don't know. XFCE in PCLOS is not as good as KDE. PCLOS seems custom tailored to KDE, so XFCE sux...
I don't really know what to do... Now, wait, and see what will happen...

A sempron should be fine, KDE4 will run on a lot less, as for XFCE try out the new PCLinuxOS Phoenix release which should be out shortly after the release of the 2010iso.

To summarise

The original question was answered, synaptic is not broken, the repo is frozen to allow the 2010 release to be focused on, so there have been no updates.

The new release will require a reinstall.

KDE3.5 is no more, it is an exdesktop environment, it is pining for the fields.

KDE4 will run on more hardware than folks initially think it will, and if you don't like it there are multiple alternate choices!!

Now all these points are now cleared up (and have been mentioned in other threads that can be found within the forum) can I ask people to stay on topic or the thread will be locked

Well at least I know what's going on now. Thought it was weird no updates for weeks. Now when the new ISO comes out, I'll dl & burn it. Run the LiveCD to see if it still likes my hardware. Then reresearch how to dual boot with Vista64. It's dual booting fine now. But it was by accident that I got dual booting working. First time with EasyBCD (which I undoubtly used wrong) I borked my MBR. Then I rebuilt my MBR through DOS. Then miracle upon miracle it was dual booting with PCLOS's grub menu. I still don't understand what I did.

I know it's nitpicking, but the quote should be "pining for the fjords". I love that Monty Python sketch. You can take the word parrot and replace it with KDE 3.5.
