Cannot delete a file
« on: February 05, 2010, 06:17:41 PM »
I have a copy of a Quickbooks file .qbw) on the SATA storage partition. I want to delet. the opton I'm given is "Move to Trash."  Well, try as I might, in user mode and root mode, via the GUI, I cannot delete this file.

I figure I'd be able to do this in Konsole. I tried "rm filename" in the directory and the file is still there.  Did I issue the command incorrectly?

Hmmm...i cannot move files off this drive, either.  I can write to it, but not move files from it to my local drive. It's a SATA drive formatted as Fat32 for storage.

Ownership permissions are set to user and root.

The second storage drive is the same thing...only owner5ship permissions are for rot at user and group levels.

Okay, I configured Dolphin and added the "Delete" option to the context menu and the file deleted!:) so, I don't think its a permission thing.

Now, for some reason, I can't drag and drop files from one dolphin window to another.

Same here. No problems with deleting though. Hope KDE4.4 will fix things ::)

I'm glad you sorted yourself out, Mark. I don't have this kind of issue ... not even on removable drives, flash disks, etc. formatted in fat32 or ext3 (i don't plug in anything that's ntfs though).

Maybe the NTFS drive is throwing things off. I unmounted and pulled the drive and reseated it. I then rebooted and things are fine.  I can now drag and drop as I did before. I'm thinking it was all due to that file hanging. Now that I have the "Delete" option in the context menu, perhaps this will solve it. I won't move files to the trash, I'll just delete them. Seems more efficient. This is how i did it KDE 3.5, as well. Moving large files to the trash seemed to always hang the system a bit.

We'll see.:)

Really enjoying KDE4!:)   Call me a convert!:)

Convert! I knew well you would be.

Still running KDE 3.5 on the laptop. i probably won't upgrade to KDE 4 on that until I get another 2-4 gigs of RAM on board.  When that happens, then I'll make the move.:)For now, KDE 3.5 on the laptop is fine.:)  But KDE 4 on this new system simply ROCKS!!   Sure, a few bumps in the road, but nothing compared to the Windows headaches one has to endure!

Wow! thansk for the info.:)

Well, I'd like to have a bit more memory.  I run WinXP in VirtualBox.  I can do so now with 1 gig.   But I certainly see the difference with the new system (4 Gigs of RAM).
