« on: March 14, 2010, 09:28:08 PM »
i am concerned about k3b and the length of time it takes to create an image of a dual layer dvd approx 768gb. at 85% complete it has taken 9 hrs and 42 min. is this normal? 9600 quad core 4gb ram fully updated 2009 kde4.

a dual layer dvd disc is not 798 gbs of size

the maximum size afik is 8.9 gbs

not all the double layer dvd discs can be copied, it could have some weird copy protection, what contents does the disc have?

usually to rip a 8.9 gbs dvd movie it takes 35 minutes

i think that if it didn't ended after 1 hour the extra 8 you mention is just time dedicated into kill your dvd drive

is that dvd drive new or old?

the speed of the machine or the amount of ram is not important, any cpu over 1.2 ghz and 512 of ram should be capable to write in the hard disk a copy of the disc(iso or folder structure, depends on the task) if there is enough space on the partition and if the partition is not fat32

sony drx-s7ou-r usb dvd drive. thing is is that i tried a previous dual layer dvd  copy-create image iso file and it took about the same ammount of time on my internal lg dvd player. :o i am not ripping the discs only making copy for backup purposes ::). the dvd's have episodes of a popular tv show on them, about 4 to 5 episodes each. yea your right the size was 7gb xxmb of info not 78gb, my bad :P. i generally use dvdrip for ripping but have been having trouble with that program because the developers are not keeping up with the newer libriaries and i havent found a way to revert back to older dependancy files :-\ so that dvdrip is happy.

"thing is is that i tried a previous dual layer dvd  copy-create image iso file and it took about the same ammount of time on my internal lg dvd player."

please have in mind that the resulting iso could not work as expected(even after 9 hours), it could say that it ended copying but could not be true, broken files or end prematurely

k9copy could help on this case but it seems that the disc have some security measure that doesn't cooperate but still worth a try

k9copy will also create a 4.5 gb iso(if you wish to do this) so you will skip the dual layer step or even create a avi containing the chapters, i haven't done this step but seems to be easy, this procedure will use all your cores(lucky you with all those cores  :P  ) because in mine(semprom at 1600mhz) a similar procedure can take 3 - 4 hours
