Speed KDE4 up by switching off apps debug info.
« on: January 28, 2010, 05:41:51 PM »
I came across a posting on the Mandriva forum. It was said that speed - especially app launching speed - could be increase by turning off app debugging information:

In terminal, type 'kdebugdialog' and enter. In the new window, deselect all checkboxes.

I claim no detailed knowledge of what this does (it does seems self-explanatory, though I could be wrong), or if there might be any side-effects. So far, I haven't seen any... as for speed increase, I detect a slight improvement.

Caveat: This appears to be for the session only, i.e. it shall have to be done for each login. I would like to know if anyone knows have to make this a permanent change.

If it is what I suspect it is, maybe Tex could somehow make this an optional, as opposed to the default state of affairs....?

As I said, I know next to nothing about this, but thought I would share it. Maybe someone wiser in the ways of KDE4 can shed some light over whether this is a sensible course of action?

Cheers!
CJ

EDIT: Actually, it seems to persist after a reboot also, so with me - for now - it seems permanent once done. Happy days!

This is the first that I've heard of kdebugdialog. I run 3.5 and I see dozens of items checked. Is this debug info ever provide needed information for regular users or is it for major testing only?

Sounds good. I had a Krusader crash and wanted to send debug info but even after installing GDB it said not sufficient information was gathered and nothing was sent.
Will definitely try this thing out.

Only thing that would worry me slightly is if the information provided by it is needed for submitting bug reports - but I haven't come across any yet, so...
If, on the other hands, it only provide info locally for app development reasons, I see no negative effects for the 'normal', day-to-day use.

Cheers!

Nobody on this thread appears to be 101% that for the home user the debug info is not needed and therefore we can go ahead and deselect everything. Can one of you experts out there confirm this? TIA

Just disable the thing.
If you still wanna receive info about some problematic KDE app, start it in full mode
Quote
kdebugdialog --fullmode

and enable messages for that app separately from the menu the way you like it; in console, log, file, message box or whatever you want.

OK dubigrasu, here we go.

Go for it  :) Don't expect miracles though...

BTW, if you want to revert the changes you made, you can always delete the "kdebugrc" file from "/.kde/share/config/" in your home folder. (or /.kde4)

Start "kdebugdialog" click OK and the defaults will be restored.

Thanks for that dubigrasu. I deselected but it hasn't made a blind bit of difference on this 900 MHz machine.

When I right click the kdebugrc file there is no option to delete in the context menu. How do you remove it?

Move it to trash then.

No option for that either. Do I have to be in root?

Reporting. I trashed the kdebugrc file in root, then proceeded to reinstate kdebugdialog but the reselected items, assume defaults, are nowhere near as many as before.

Only if you running KDE as root.

If you're running KDE as user and used Kdebugdialog also as user, then the file is your user folder, and you have rights to delete it.

I am now totally confused. I was not running KDE as root and used kdebugdialog as user but as user it would not allow me to trash the kdebugrc file. I had to switch to root to do so. Go figure...

Have no idea why. I'm using it as user here and is OK.

OK dubigrasu, many thanks for your time. End of task.
