Updating from cache - possible?
« on: January 28, 2010, 01:47:31 AM »
Hi,

since remastering does not appear to be an option right now (see here:  http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,67864.0.html)
I was wondering the following:

I set synaptic to save all I install in the /var/cache directory.  If I install the stock standard PCLinuxOS on a PC and have all updates + kde4 updates on a dvd and install those from the dvd, what would be my chances of success?

If you copy them to the same relative directory, Synaptic should install them without doing the download again.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

Thanks O-P.  That would be quite sweet and certainly would help those not having broadband at home - which are most of us.  I'll give it a proper test and let you know as soon as PCLOS 2010 is a finished (meaning out of beta and rc phase) distro.

What you essentially want to do is to install packages stored in a local, custom repository, or possibly two, local, custom repositories. I am currently using two, local, custom repositories for installing packages. One repository is stored on a 16 GB flash drive; the other resides in </home/rg/Repository/pclinuxos/2007/RPMS.special> on my hard drive. For more information on this, see my post:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,66149.0.html

You might find flash drives to be more useful and efficient for installing packages than DVD discs. Just plug the flash drives in and you are ready to go. No inserting and ejecting DVD discs again-and-again.
