Kde 3.5

What will happen for those of us who do not like kde 4 or gnome when kde 3.5 is no longer viable?  Does Tex have something up his sleeve?  Will the MiniMe revision of kde 4 make it more like kde 3.5?

What exactly is it that you don't like in Gnome and KDE4 that's in KDE3.5? Is it a matter of functions,programs,look and feel?

Welcome to the forums

There are no secret up Texstar's sleeves that I know of, although there already various options available, look in synaptic and you will find various desktop environments and window managers.

Try them out, find one you like and keep it.

The 'loss' of KDE3 has been covered multiple times in the forums, it is no longer developed and as time goes on the libs will become out of date and potentially cause breakage in other apps, and at some point will inevitably be removed from the repo . this is unfortunate, but is something that is outside of PCLinuxOS's control.  

It is possible to get KDE4 to feel more KDE3 like - but that will be down to users to find what they like and learn (as we all have so far) to get the best out of the KDE4 environment, personally I have grown to like KDE4 although it took some time to warm to.

If you really don't like KDE4 then i would suggest the PClinuxOS remasters Phoenix or the LXDE (which can also be made to look/feel KDE3 like )

kde4 and gnome can be customized in many ways to make it work the way you need them

the only valid reason to stay with kde3 is because you have a app that doesn't work on kde4 or gnome and there is very few of thosenow

since kde3 had the last update in july last year and last security patch in october, stay with kde3 is not a good idea i think

YouCanToo did many of us that are KDE3.5 fans a huge favor by creating a special repository.  In the search box above enter "Repository for KDE3.5" including the quotation marks.

Disadvantage as others will say is the repo is frozen in time.  No further updates or development.  Advantage is should you wish to add a new app to your existing KDE3 install you can do so from a dedicated repository.

It is a matter of feel, mostly.  Gnome does not have a navigation panel in nautilus like konqueror does, and I have been used to using one since Dosshell came out.  I like XFE ok but konqueror is better.  I have tried Gnome several times, and it is just not as configurable as Kde for my tastes.  And there is no synaptic repair tool in PCLinuxGnome, so I could not download package updates after installing because synaptic was broke.  I just discovered this morning that LXDE has an option to use Kde or Gnome so I tried it in Kde.  It is OK, but the Kde is more generic, so you can really see what a good job Tex does with Kde.  As to Kde 4 I would like it to look like 3.5, cuz it looks too much like Vista Aero and the lack of contrast in the theme is harder for old guys like me to see.  I hope they take a step back like MS did when going from Vista to 7.  I have been with PCLOS for almost 3 years now, and though I try other distros, I stay with it because it is just better all around.

In KDE4 go to SystemSettings-> Look & feel. There you will be able to  set it to look however you want it.

When the machine is booting, at the log in screen where you type your name and password, there are options like for session type.....and others. That is where you can change it either for that session only or make it default.

I wouldn't take it that the desire is to use an alternate DE (KDE in lieu of LXDE), but how to "theme" LXDE to be more similar to KDE3.  I'm not sure how to accomplish that off the top of my head, as I haven't played extensively with re-configuring LXDE.
