i have a home partition of 160 gb. i have had this through many upgrades in my time with pclinuxos. my problem seems to be lost space on my hard drive. other than a few big files in home vids and virtualbox i think i should have at least 75 gb free but the properties window says i have 13 gb left.  this is really weird as i always keep most of my iso's and other large files on storage drives. what is the best way to check the partition for lost-hidden files etc.

For KDE3 there is a tool that gives a graphical representation of the disk usage - whose name escapes me at present - not sure about KDE4.

I think johnboy is referring to filelight in the repositories

or you could try in a terminal
Code: [Select]
$ find /home -size +1G
to find any file greater than 1GB

Have you entered your trash recently? ::)
Motherboard   Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3
Hard Drives      2 x Maxtor STM350032 500GB SATA
Memory      16GB RAM
Processor      Intel core i5 3.30GHz
Video         nVidia GeForce GT430
Sound      HDA Intel PCH
PCLinuxOS          KDE

I just remembered .........   it was Kdirstat   I think.
It shows - graphically - what was using the space on a partition or directory.

For KDE3 there is a tool that gives a graphical representation of the disk usage - whose name escapes me at present - not sure about KDE4.
It helps to do this without adding a new package, I believe KDF is part of KDE Base.

It does not in any way help answer the question posed ........  all that does is show how much space is used and is free on mounted partitions ...........  it does not give any indication of what is using the space consumed. It is thus useless in the context of the question posed in this thread.

JohnBoy:

Checked the synaptic and found this when searched for Kdirstat term.

Is this any good?

Here is how it looks like:

It looks like something that may help a lot in finding the big files taking up the space on the hdd...

Yes that was already mentioned for KDE4 by critter and I mentioned Kdirstat for KDE3.

The OP did not specify which he is running.

BTW ........  I find that Filelight very confusing and could not use it in any meaningful way. Kdirstat was a much better GUI representation IMO.
