Accessing Root Directory
« on: January 26, 2010, 05:16:06 PM »
I have just replaced my hard drive and reloaded PCLinuxOS, but I am having trouble getting everything set up.  I installed PCLOS from a live CD with version 2009.1.  I then did an update of all installed components.  My first problem is that I can not access the root directory from konqueror which I could before my hard drive crashed.  My version of KDE is 3.5.10.  My system has two 500 GB hard drives with Windows XP on drive 0 and PCLOS on drive 1.  GRUB is also on drive 0.  I know that I will need to access the etc/fstab file, and I may need help with specific entries later on, but I need to access the file before make changes.  Can anyone help?

Can you boot to the installed OS? If you can, then you already have access to the / directory. Click on the house icon, then, when konqueror opens, click the up arrow in the upper tool bar twice. Now you are in the / directory. If you are speaking of the /root directory, you need to be root to enter that.

Yes, I can boot into PCLOS just fine.  In the previous installation, I could browse the file structure (including the root directory) from my personal user account by clicking on the "My Computer" Icon then the "Storage Media" Icon.  I could then access a particular file by using the "Open As Root" action.  That doesn't seem possible from this installation.  In fact, even when I log in as the Root user, I can not access the root directory from the "My Computer/Storage Media" Icons.  I can only access it from the "Home" Icon.  Is this normal in the newest version of PCLOS or do I have something set wrong?.

To be quite honest, I would guess something is not set right, or something is missing from the installation, but I really don't know for sure, as i never use the My Computer thing. As a matter of fact, I normally delete the icon from the desktop as soon as I first log in to a new installation. The only reason I have it present now is to try to help if someone else has a specific problem with it, and does want to use it. Looks like that would be you, at the moment.  ;D

So lets start at the beginning. What, exactly, happens when you click the icon?

When I click on the "My Computer" icon, a window opens up with several icons including the "Storage Media" icon.  Clicking on the "Storage Media" icon changes the display to show icons for the various drives on my computer.  Clicking on the icon for my Linux drive changes the display to show folder icons for the various user accounts except the root user.   Clicking the up arrow on the tool bar takes me back to the previous display.  It works this way even when logged in as the root user.  In preferences I have checked the "Show hidden files" selection.

It sounds perfectly normal, for a /home partition. Is there not another icon for the / partition?

No.  The only icons present are the following:  bob, bradley, guest, jim, and lost+found.  When I am logged in as bob, all the folders except bob have locks on them.  When I am logged in as root, the display is the same except for the locks.  I can only get to the root directory when I am logged in as root and select the "Home" icon .

That description makes no sense at all, and contradicts your last post. Start again at My Computer. When clicked, you said you got this;

When Storage Media is clicked, you should get your personal version of this;

showing all the partitions on your system.

Post a screen shot of your version of that system:/media window.

I don't know what happened, but while I was trying to get the screen shots, the system started working like it used to.  Thanks for your help.  If it starts acting up again I get back to you.  Thanks again.

I'm back again, like a bad penny.  After posting my last message, my file system became so corrupted that I had to reformat the drive and reinstall PCLOS.  Now it is back acting like it was when I first opened this thread.

I'll try to provide the screen shots like you asked, but if they don't come through I'll need some help on how to do it.  I assuming that I can save the screen shot to the clipboard then paste it in here.

The first shot is after double clicking on "My Computer".

No. This is not working.  Neither ctrl C nor the "Save to Clipboard" button in screen shot will put the image on the clipboard.  I can save the image to a file but not to the clip board.

You need to add it as an attachment to the post, or host it on someplace like Imageshack, then link to it here. The Imageshack image is;

with the code appearing as below;

OK, I'll try this again.  I can't attach more than two files, so this will take several posts.

These two pictures show what happens when I double click on "My Computer" then "Storage Media"
