Is "My Computer" not supported in KDE4?
« on: January 26, 2010, 04:31:55 AM »
In KDE3 there was a "My Computer" icon that showed all my drives when clicked. Is this not available in KDE4?

Thanks.

I'm afraid you will not find it. It is not a feature of KDE 4.

Ok thanks Fraxinus. That's a shame it was a really useful feature.

Yes, I miss it too. It was a great feature that has disappeared with KDE4. The Dolphin alternative is certainly not an improvement and lacks functionality.  :(

I wonder if this topic deserves a "sticky" at the top of this board. I reckon that most people coming new to KDE 4 will be used to "My computer" or equivalent on other desktops - it would save them spending time trying to find it, as I did when I was first trialling KDE 4!

pirate - we know we can see our various drives in the Places bar on Dolphin. However, take a look at one of your filesystems in that bar ("jim1", for example). Hover your mouse over the icon; right click on the icon. Does it tell you what kind of drive it is? Its capacity? How much space there is left on it? What the permissions are? The device node?

In the Storage Media section of My Computer on KDE 3.5 you could get all of this info in a second. For those of us who have to work with lots of drives (internal, usb ...) it is incredibly useful.

These changes are out of our hands and in those of the KDE team, I guess, so I suppose there is not much more to discuss, really! Except, perhaps we can follow the KDE forum and politely express our views there.

Hey pirate, from the looks of your added red line, it appears you might have been under just a little stress!  ;) :D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
A wife told her husband to whisper dirty things into her ear.

The man then replied, "The kitchen, the living room,
the bathroom, and the dining room."

Then there was a fight!

fraxinus, sorry for plunging in here, but in Dolphin I clicked on the device and did the right-click in the main window. A single additional click and I think we have all the information you described. I know it's different from KDE3 (as well as Windows), but I'm thinking not so much more hassle.

Except the device node.

Oh well, if Dolphin isn't up to it, there's always the CLI....

Reminds me of the way LXDE does it, which I am used to on my laptop.

And as fraxinus pointed out, it still doesn't do it well enough.

There's a lot of increased functionality in KDE4. KDE4 is (or will soon be) a more useful environment than KDE3.

But that doesn't mean that all complaints should be dismissed as symptoms of neophobia. Some of them are highly relevant.
