Some PCLinuxOS problems!!

Hello friends,

I am using PCLinuxOS MiniMe 2009.1 Kde 3 on my usb. I am having a strange problem. Any data cd or dvd disks I enter in my dvd rom or dvd burner I get this Konqueror error: mount: mount point /media/cdrom2 does not exist and mount: mount point /media/cdrom does not exist. The same errors appear when I try to watch some dvd or cd movies. I am not understanding why this is happening. I cannot access to the contents of cd or dvd, watch movies and burn blank cd\dvd disks.

In the KDesktop, the Display Settings, then in Power Control, I always keep the Suspend after and Power off after at 1 or 2 minutes. But the monitor does not turn off. Only a black screen appears. I tried many times my changing the times but the monitor remains on forever except for the appearance of the black screen. Why this is happening I don't know. Its quite confusing.

Friends, I will appreciate any kind of help for the above problems now I am suffering. Thanks in advance.

1. Your problems with the CD/DVD disks result from having improper configurations. The applications should be set to read devices, not mount points; ie /dev/cdrom or /dev/dvd.

2. Suspend does not equal shut down, or turn off. Suspend, by design, just blanks the screen, until you move the mouse or press a key, at which point the screen should again show your desktop. The power off should be set for quite some time after the suspend takes effect. Something like suspend after 5 minutes idle, power off after 30 minutes idle, would be reasonable if you want these features.

I personally find these features so annoying and unreliable that I turn them off from the get go. If I want my monitor turned off, I can press the button, and having the screen go blank while I'm studying a set of long technical instructions only makes my blood pressure go up, along with my desire to do grave bodily harm to whoever is responsible for the existence of said "feature".

old-polack, thanks for your reply. I don't know how to set applications (i.e.,dvdrom, dvd burner) to read devices. How do I do that? Can you give me some instructions? Then how to set proper configurations for the devices?? I will appreciate for your reply. Thanks in advance.

The settings would need to be set in each application used. Check out the screen shots in the following link for mplayer settings. The last shot is where the device settings are made.

Thanks old-polack for the reply. I cannot find either Preferences or Settings. I am not understanding how will my dvd-rom and dvd burner gonna work. Still now I cannot access to my cd and dvd disks (whether data or movie) via Konqueror and I get the same errors that I have mentioned in one of my earlier post. I tried to access my dvd and cd via Dolphin file manager but I get the same error. I am not understanding what to do. A more detailed instruction would be useful cause I am quite knew to MiniMe and don't know that much of advanced features in this distro. Thanks in advance

You need to start somewhere, with an application designed to work with your optical devices. As media players fit that description, start by inserting a movie DVD in the tray. To get easily posted details, for the moment we'll use a terminal and some commands, to try to play the movie. If the application is configured properly the movie should play. If it does not, we should at least get error messages that will help to figure out why it doesn't work.

With the DVD in the tray, open a terminal. PC --> System --> Terminals --> Konsole - Terminal Program. At the prompt, enter:

[tantrik@localhost ~]$ mplayer dvd://                    <Enter>

If the movie plays, report that, otherwise post the error message received.

The MVs not available refers to Motion Vectors, which aren't needed, so the warning is harmless. The fact that you can play the movie confirms the optical device is properly recognized. To see what we have to work with in the /dev directory;

[tantrik@localhost ~]$ ls -l /dev |grep dvd                <Enter>

Post the results of both of those commands.

So you have two optical devices. Two of the links are to /dev/hda. Is hda a read only device, or does it have some burning capcity? I'm assuming from the link that hdb is a DVD burner. Is that correct?

hda is read only device. It is the dvd rom. Whereas, hdb is the dvd burner. Your guesses are correct. Thanks in advance.

Have you got lines for these two devices in /etc/fstab? You shouldn't have. Try commenting them out with a leading # if you have. (You have to do that as root.)

You are just fine having those lines there, but to have them work, the mount point directories need to exist. You have to create them as root, using the mkdir command. (make directory)

The quick and easy way;

[root@localhost ~]# mkdir /media/cdrom /media/cdrom2        <Enter>

That's it. When you try to mount the devices now they should work. As far as DVD movie playing is concerned, or audio CDs, neither needs to be mounted to play. In fact, audio CDs won't mount, as they have no filesystem on them.
