A little more info here,

I have attempted to turn off ACPI off but it made no change.

When it is shutting down the verbose reads.

Unmounting proc file system:   [OK]
Halting system...
md: stopping all md devices.
Shutdown: hda
System halted.

And stops right there.

Has it always behaved in this manner, or is this a recent (new) development?

On xfce I realised this has to do with some applications that are still running when you hit shutdown.
In my case for example, it seemed to be caused by Jajuk.

It is a new install.

Sounds like an ACPI (implementation / enable) issue.  If you run:
Code: [Select]
shutdown
from a root terminal, what are the results?

I believe the command is "
Code: [Select]
poweroff"

And it yields the same result.

I have disabled and enabled every combination imaginable with ACPI just not the right one.

My LXDE shuts down and powers off the PC as expected so I will look at my settings and post them.
As soon as I reboot.  ;D

In Control Center

Under "System"
ACPI = Running
ACPID = Running

Under "Boot / Set up boot system"
Enable ACPI is checked.

under "advanced" on same screen,
Enable SMP is checked
Enable APIC is checked
Enable Local APIC is checked

That is all I see that would effect the shutdown. Sorry if this has wasted your time.

Not a waste of time.  Appreciate you taking your time to share your settings.

Those are the default settings.

I will keep tiring.

Thanks again.

Have you checked your BIOS settings?

If you're going to do so, I would recommend going through each page and making a note of the current settings, so they can be restored.  Then try loading the defaults for your BIOS.
What is your MB make/model?  What make/version of BIOS?

Hello,
It is recommended to disable all power saving settings in the bios and let Linux deal with everything. It is possible for the bios to override Linux and cause problems.

If there's a harder way to do something I'll probably find it.

I used to get this problem on the old machine under KDe3,

I never got a solution as it was something intermittent.

On LXDE beta i did manage to have the same problem you describe after a great amount of switching between the LX and Main installs (both beta's currently installed).

The only thing i can think of was a rather odd file transfer i did, copied a remaster into my separate "var" partition prior to burning.
This seems a most unlikely cause of the complaint.

Sorry i cannot offer a solution.
