How do I find fastest repository source?
« on: January 23, 2010, 04:16:25 PM »
I just installed 2009.2 and I tried the distro upgrade. There were 900packages for installation. I had to wait 1-2 hours to download them.
My location is in Greece. Our local source gives errors. Tried italian source and it was slow (although when I tried it to another computer was fast).
Is there a program that I can find which source is the faster (closer to me) and use it for updates?

Welcome to the group, stick around and enjoy yourself.

Have a look at this thread, but note that it is in the advanced section.

Regards
Andy

I had communicated with the ftp.cc.uoc.gr admin a few months ago because their mirror wasn't updating. The issue was fixed but some weeks ago, after some downtime of the server the mirror folder isn't even there anymore.

I'll see if I can get in touch with ntua.gr's admin. If I'm lucky we'll have a blazing fast mirror.. for whole Europe.

Repository Speed Test program (discussed in the above mentioned thread) works very well and is installable from Synaptic.  In Synaptic search for "apt-sources-update".  After installing, it can be found by going into the K Menu to System> Configuration> Packaging> Repository Speed Test.

Good luck with your researches. I have never used the Repo Speed Test application. I am in the UK and (when not using PASS) have consistently found gnustep.ethz.ch to be good and fast.
